Introduction: It is difficult to adapt or create new strategies for dengue control in rural areas due to the dispersion of homes and the lack of knowledge about the presence and behavior of the vector in these areas. Spatial data analysis could help understand time and space dynamics related to the transmission of vector-borne diseases in rural areas and, thus, contribute to the prevention and control of dengue.

Objective: To determine the probability of the presence of the dengue vector Aedes aegypti in the rural area of the municipalities of Anapoima and La Mesa, in the central area of Colombia.

Materials And Methods: The probability of the presence or absence of the vector in the study area was determined by means of the kriging spatial interpolation method.

Results: The region with the highest probability of the presence of the vector was located in the central part, close to the urban centers of both municipalities.

Conclusion: This study shows the importance of geostatistics for the surveillance of vector-borne diseases and the analysis of time and space dynamics of vector insects and of diseases transmitted by them.

Background: Unlike non-rheumatic atrial fibrillation (AF), where left atrial thrombus (LAT) is predominantly confined to the left atrial appendage (LAA), a significant proportion of LAT in rheumatic AF occurs within the left atrial cavity (LAC). However, LAC thrombosis in rheumatic AF has not been extensively studied. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of LAT and its subtypes and identify potential predictors of LAT.

Correct classification of type 1 (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) is challenging due to overlapping clinical features and the increasingly early onset of T2D, particularly in South Asians. Polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for T1D and T2D have been shown to work relatively well in South Asians, despite being derived from largely European-ancestry samples. Here we used PRSs to investigate the rate of potential misclassification of diabetes amongst British Bangladeshis and Pakistanis.

Article Synopsis
  • Hyperacute cardiac CT is more effective than transthoracic echocardiography in detecting intracardiac thrombus, but its routine use is limited due to costs and risks.
  • A study of 1,136 ischemic stroke or TIA patients found that longer arterial input function (AIF) dispersal times correlate with the presence of thrombus and worse outcomes, with a specific cutoff of 33 seconds indicating higher risk.
  • The findings support using AIF dispersal measurements to help identify patients who may benefit from cardiac imaging, potentially optimizing resource use in stroke management.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE), consisting of both deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), is an extremely common condition both in the United States and worldwide. Not only is the diagnosis associated with significant morbidity and mortality for patients, but also it imposes a deleterious financial burden on the US healthcare system. Diagnosis may be challenging due to variability in clinical presentation and requires a sequential workup including assessment of clinical pretest probability for VTE, D-dimer testing, and imaging.

To investigate if progression of coronary artery calcification (CAC) in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is associated with renal and traditional cardiovascular risk factors as well as incidence of myocardial infarctions. CAC progression was evaluated by cardiac computed tomography (CT) at baseline and after 5 years. Multivariable Poisson regression was applied to investigate associations between CAC progression and baseline values for traditional cardiovascular risk factors, CAC, SLE disease duration, lupus nephritis, and renal function.
