Three papers in this issue focus on the role of calibration in model fit statistics, including the net reclassification improvement (NRI) and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI). This commentary reviews the development of such reclassification statistics along with more recent advances in our understanding of these measures. We show how the two-category NRI and the IDI are affected by changes in the event rate in theory and in an applied example. We also describe the role of calibration and how it may be assessed. Finally, we discuss the relevance of the event rate NRI for clinical use. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The first shikimic acid derived fluorescent carbon dots (SACNDs-FITC) for multi-modal detection and simultaneous removal of Hg is revealed. The fluorescence of SACNDs-FITC centered at 520 nm can be selectively quenched by Hg, while the emission centered at 420 nm remains constant which can be used for self-calibration. Naked-eye distinguishable color change from yellow to colourless under daylight and from green to blue under UV light could be observed for SACNDs-FITC in the real-time detection of Hg.

The most widely used radiance sensor for monitoring Night Sky Brightness (NSB) is the Sky Quality Meter (SQM), making its measurement stability fundamental. A method using the Sun as a calibrator was applied to analyse the quality of the measures recorded in the Veneto Region (Italy) and at La Silla (Chile). The analysis mainly revealed a tendency toward reductions in measured NSB due to both instrument ageing and atmospheric variations.

Within this assessment, relative (point-to-point) tracking of extremities could benefit from increased accuracy. This paper investigates the effects of particle morphology (PM) and particle size distribution (PSD) on the micro-macro mechanical behaviours of granular soils through a novel X-ray micro-computed tomography (μCT)-based discrete element method (DEM) technique. This technique contains the grain-scale property extraction by the X-ray μCT, DEM parameter calibration by the one-to-one mapping technique, and the massive derivative DEM simulations. In total, 25 DEM samples were generated with a consideration of six PSDs and four PMs.
