This pilot study investigated the potential of a newly developed shoe design to improve gait parameters without altering muscle activity in healthy women. The shoe design features a V-shaped heel and a high-elasticity midsole, which are intended to enhance stability during heel contact and promote efficient load transfer throughout the gait cycle. Ten study participants underwent a randomized crossover design, wearing developed and general shoes during the trials.

Meso Hybridized Silk Fibroin Watchband for Wearable Biopotential Sensing and AI Gesture Signaling.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science (MEL), College of Ocean and Earth Sciences, Xiamen University, Xiamen, Fujian, 361102, P. R. China.

Human biopotential signals, such as electrocardiography, are closely linked to health and chronic conditions. Electromyography, corresponds to muscle actions and is pertinent to human-machine interactions. Here, we present a type of smart and flexible watchband that includes a mini flexible electrode array based on Mo-Au filament mesh, combined with mesoscopic hybridized silk fibroin films.

Fast and accurate assessment of skin mechanics holds great promise in diagnosing various epidermal diseases, yet substantial challenges remain in developing simple and wearable strategies for continuous monitoring. Here, we present a design concept, named active near-infrared spectroscopy patch (ANIRP) for continuously mapping skin mechanics. ANIRP addresses these challenges by integrating near-infrared (NIR) sensing with mechanical actuators, enabling rapid measurement (<1 s) of Young's modulus, high spatial sensing density (~1 cm), and high spatial sensitivity (<1 mm).

Biomechanical effects of functional clear aligners on the stomatognathic system in teens with class II malocclusion: a new model through finite element analysis.

BMC Oral Health

October 2024

State Key Laboratory of Oral & Maxillofacial Reconstruction and Regeneration, National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases, Shaanxi Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases, Department of Orthodontics, School of Stomatology, Air Force Medical University, Xi'an, 710032, China.

Objectives: The Functional Clear Aligner (FCA) is a novel orthodontic appliance designed for the treatment of Class II malocclusion with mandibular retrognathia in adolescents. The aim of this study was to investigate the biomechanical characteristics of the masticatory muscles, jawbone, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) during mandibular advancement using either FCA or Class II elastics combined with clear aligner (Class II elastics) through finite element analysis.

Materials And Methods: A 3D finite element model of the 'muscle-jawbone-TMJ-appliance' system was constructed based on CBCT and MRI images of a boy with skeletal Class II malocclusion.

Highly Stretchable Sensitive Multiscale Hydrogel Inspired by Biological Muscles for Wearing Sensors.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

October 2024

State Key Laboratory of Marine Food Processing & Safety Control, Dalian Polytechnic University, Dalian, Liaoning Province 116034, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Hydrogels are promising for wearable electronics due to their stretchiness and comfort, but many lack the required sensitivity and mechanical strength for high-performance sensors.
  • The proposed strategy involves creating a multiscale hydrogel using densely entangled elastic microspheres that enhance sensitivity and toughness, allowing it to respond quickly to applied pressure.
  • This innovative hydrogel not only maintains excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility, but also resolves issues related to complicated synthesis and cost, making it suitable for a wide range of wearable and implantable electronic devices.
