Objective: To investigate the association between polymorphism of rs3212986 in ERCC1 and susceptibility to preeclampsia in the Chinese Han population.

Study Design: Samples of 642 preeclampsia patients and 877 controls were genotyped for rs3212986 using TaqMan allele discrimination assays. The genetic and allelic distributions between the groups were compared by Pearson's χ test.

Result: There was no difference in the genotypic and allelic distributions between cases and controls (P>0.05). Statistical difference in genotypic frequencies of rs3212986 was observed between early-onset and late-onset preeclampsia (χ=6.985, P=0.030). When subdivided into TT/GG+GT groups, a significant difference was found between early-onset and late-onset preeclampsia (χ=6.528, P=0.011, OR=2.011, 95%CI 1.167-3.465).

Conclusion: The polymorphisms of rs3212986 showed no association with the risk of preeclampsia in the Chinese Han population. However, the difference in the genotypic distribution between early-onset and late-onset preeclampsia suggest the need for future studies.

Association between estrogen and kidney function: population based evidence and mutual bidirectional Mendelian randomization study.

Clin Exp Nephrol

January 2025

Department of Nephrology, Yueyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai, China.

Background: Previous studies have suggested a potential role of estrogen in the pathophysiology of chronic kidney disease (CKD); however, the association and causality between estrogen and kidney function remain unclear.

Methods: The cross-sectional correlation between serum estradiol concentration and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) was analyzed using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2016. Causality was tested using mutual bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) approaches based on six large-scale GWAS studies.

Exciton emitters in two-dimensional monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) provide a boulevard for the emerging optoelectronic field, ranging from miniaturized light-emitting diodes to quantum emitters and optical communications. However, the low quantum efficiency from limited light-matter interactions and harmful substrate effects seriously hinders their applications. In this work, we achieve a ∼438-fold exciton photoluminescence enhancement by constructing a Fabry-Pérot cavity consisting of monolayer WS and a micron-scale hole on the SiO/Si substrate.

Intraoperative sensitization in trigeminal region caused by postherpetic neuralgia: a case report.

J Med Case Rep

January 2025

Department of Pain, The Third Xiangya Hospital and Institute of Pain Medicine, Central South University, Changsha, China.

Background: Interventional therapy of trigeminal neuropathic pain has been well documented; however, intraoperative monitoring and management of pain hypersensitivity remains barely reported, which may pose a great challenge for pain physicians as well as anesthesiologists.

Case Presentation: A 77-year-old Han Chinese male, who suffered from severe craniofacial postherpetic neuralgia, underwent pulsed radiofrequency of trigeminal ganglion in the authors' department twice. The authors successfully placed a radiofrequency needle through the foramen ovale during the first procedure with local anesthesia and intravenous sedation (dexmedetomidine).

Characterizing biomarkers of ageing in Singaporeans: the ABIOS observational study protocol.

Geroscience

January 2025

Healthy Longevity Translational Research Program, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, Singapore, Singapore.

Ageing is the primary driver of age-associated chronic diseases and conditions. Asian populations have traditionally been underrepresented in studies understanding age-related diseases. Thus, the Ageing BIOmarker Study in Singaporeans (ABIOS) aims to characterise biomarkers of ageing in Singaporeans, exploring associations between molecular, physiological, and digital biomarkers of ageing.

Climate change and environmental degradation are critical global challenges, and the G-20 nations play a pivotal role in addressing these issues due to their substantial contributions to global GDP and carbon emissions. Transitioning toward renewable energy sources is imperative for mitigating CO2 emissions and achieving sustainable development. This study investigates the impact of technological innovation, gross domestic product (GDP), renewable energy consumption, economic freedom, and financial advancement on renewable energy use and environmental pollution levels in G-20 countries from 1995 to 2022.
