Moldable and injectable calcium-phosphate cements (CPCs) are material candidates for bone replacement applications. In the present study, we examined the effectiveness of sodium alginate and sodium citrate additives to the liquid phase of CPC, in improving its handling property as well as mechanical strength. The use of these additives enhanced the handling property significantly, in terms of consistency as compared to CPC without additives due to the liquefying effect caused by the adsorption of citrate ions on the cement particles. Sodium alginate and sodium citrate were added to CPC, which was set by the chelate-bonding capability of inositol phosphate, and was composed of mainly α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) phase (>90%). The compressive strength of the CPC containing sodium alginate and sodium citrate was 3.4 ± 0.3 MPa, which was significantly higher than cement without additives. Furthermore, this cement exhibited favorable osteoconductivity and bioresorbability, and remained the α-TCP phase after 4-week implantation in a pig tibiae model. These results suggested that the cement is a potential candidate as a bioresorbable paste-like artificial bone. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Water-dispersible core/shell CuInZnSe/ZnS (CIZSe/ZnS) quantum dots (QDs) were efficiently synthesized under microwave irradiation using -acetylcysteine (NAC) and sodium citrate as capping agents. The photoluminescence (PL) emission of CIZSe/ZnS QDs can be tuned from 593 to 733 nm with varying the Zn : Cu molar ratio in the CIZSe core. CIZSe/ZnS QDs prepared with a Zn : Cu ratio of 0.

The preparation of a solid dosage form containing bacteriophages, which meets pharmaceutical requirements and ensures long-term stability of the phage effect, is significant for implementing phage therapy in practice. A commonly used method for processing phages into a solid form is freeze-drying into a (so-called) freeze-dried cake; however, to date there have been no studies examining the pharmacopeial parameters of freeze-dried tablets with bacteriophages. In this study, we describe the preparation and properties of freeze-dried tablets containing a cocktail of purified pseudomonal bacteriophage DSM 33593 from the genus Pbunavirus and staphylococcal bacteriophage DSM 33473 from the genus Kayvirus (10 PFU/tablet) as the active ingredient.

Aortic valve calcification results from degenerative processes associated with several pathologies. These processes are influenced by age, chronic inflammation, and high concentrations of phosphate ions in the plasma, which contribute to induce mineralization in the aortic valve and deterioration of cardiovascular health. Environmental factors, such as wood smoke that emits harmful and carcinogenic pollutants, carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen oxide (NO), as well as other reactive compounds may also be implicated.

Aggregated gold nanoparticles as photoactivators for the photopolymerization of proteins.

Photopolymerization of bovine serum albumin was carried out using reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by the irradiation of citrate-stabilized gold nanoparticles by a pulsed Nd:YAG laser. The ROS in this case, singlet oxygen (O), targets aromatic amino acids within the protein to induce photopolymerization or crosslinking. Other ROS, like the hydroxyl radical, can also form in solution and under high-energy irradiation.
