Concussion is a major public health issue that has received much publicity in recent years. Reported concussions are increasing across all ages, including the highest rates in pediatric age ranges. Due to the age-related physiological responses and differential recovery of symptoms after concussion, special consideration must be given to youth concussions. Concussion can affect each child differently and likely affects children differently than adults. Until the past decade, there has been a scarcity of scientifically rigorous studies examining concussions in children. This increasing amount of research and consensus has begun to influence the definition, evaluation, management, return to school and play recommendations, prevention, and education relating to pediatric concussion. The purpose of this article is a review of relevant research published in the last few years (2015-2017) with highlights of these updates summarized for clinical use.

Purpose: Diagnosis of Menière's disease relies on clinical symptoms. Injected 3T MRI can show endolymphatic hydrops (EH), but correlation with the clinical status of MD, (probable -PMD or definite-DMD) remains doubtful. We revealed endolymphatic pressure disruption through functional exploration and verified if it was associated with an EH through MRI.

The water buffalo () is susceptible to bovine tuberculosis (TB), which receives increased attention in areas where buffalo breeding is prevalent, such as in Southern Italy, especially in the Campania region, where 70% of the buffalo stock is bred. Since 2012, TB testing in buffalo herds has been conducted using the Single Intradermal Test (SIT), with the Comparative Intradermal test (CIT) used in cases of inconclusive results. From 2012 to 2016, the interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) test was occasionally employed experimentally in herds with TB outbreaks to expedite eradication efforts.

Real-life study of the use of oto-acoustic emissions in the diagnosis of intracranial hypotension.

Rev Neurol (Paris)

March 2024

Department of Evaluation and Treatment of Pain, FHU INOVPAIN, CHU Timone, AP-HM, Marseille, France; INSERM U-1107, CHU de Clermont-Ferrand, Clermont-Ferrand, France.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the use of oto-acoustic emissions (OAE) as a non-invasive method for diagnosing intracranial hypotension (IH) in patients where traditional MRI results may be inconclusive.
  • Conducted over nearly nine years, the study found that out of 32 patients with suspected IH, 18 were confirmed to have the condition, with endolymphatic hydrops (ELH) detected in 15 of these cases.
  • However, the findings suggest that OAE is not reliable enough to differentiate IH from other similar conditions, indicating the need for further diagnostic methods.

This qualitative study is nested within a 12-week pilot randomized-controlled, two-arm trial involving high-intensity progressive resistance training (PRT) or PRT with a multi-nutrient, whey-protein supplementation (PRT+WP) in sarcopenic older adults (trial registration no: TCTR20230703001). The aim was to investigate sarcopenic participants' perceptions and barriers to this multi-modal intervention strategy that may accelerate "real-world" implementation. Eighteen older adults (one man) with possible sarcopenia were invited to join the study, of whom 16 women were randomized to a thrice-weekly PRT ( = 8) program (80% of 1-repetitive maximum, six resistance band exercises) only or PRT plus daily weekday milk-based WP supplementation (PRT+WP, = 8).

Introduction: A concussion or sports-related concussion (SRC) is a traumatic brain injury induced by biomechanical forces. After a SRC diagnosis is made, a concussed individual must undergo a period away from competition while they return to their baseline level of functioning. The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) currently recommend a minimum of 6 days restriction from competitive cycling following a SRC but there is a growing feeling amongst those involved in brain injury research that this period is too short.
