We observed the growth phase transition of n-alkanethiols (AT), CH(CH)SH, n = 4-16, directly implanted on a bare Si(111) surface, forming an AT monolayer. These monolayers were characterized with static water-contact angle, high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, near-edge X-ray fine-structure spectroscopy, and grazing-angle reflection absorption Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The integrated spectral results indicated that the implanted n-AT molecules formed a self-oriented and densely packed monolayer through formation of an S-Si bond. With the number of carbons in the alkyl chain at six or more, namely beginning at hexanethiol, the molecular monolayer began to develop an orientation-ordered structure, which is clearly shorter than that for AT monolayers on Au and Ag. This result implies that, with a stronger molecule-substrate interaction, an ordered molecular monolayer can form with a short chain.

Silicene, a single layer of Si atoms, shares many remarkable electronic properties with graphene. So far, silicene has been synthesized in its epitaxial form on a few surfaces of solids. Thus, the problem of silicene-substrate interaction appears, which usually depresses the original electronic behavior but may trigger properties superior to those of bare components.

Planar GaN/CuO Microcrystal Composite Junction Photoanode for Efficient Solar Water Splitting.

Langmuir

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Optical Information Materials and Technology, South China Academy of Advanced Optoelectronics, South China Normal University, Guangzhou 510006, People's Republic of China.

CuO microcrystals are electrodeposited on an epitaxial GaN layer on a Si(111) substrate to improve the solar water splitting efficiency of a GaN photoanode. The performance of the GaN/CuO composite junction photoanode is investigated as a function of the CuO deposition amount for CuO microcrystal formation. For optimum CuO deposition amount, the photocurrent density is significantly enhanced compared to that of the bare GaN photoanode.

The role of silver localized surface plasmons (LSPs) on the luminescence of a Si(111)-(7 × 7) surface has been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) with a silver tip at 77 K. On a bare Si(111)-(7 × 7) surface, a characteristic peak at 1.85 eV dominates the STM-induced luminescence spectrum, although the luminescence intensity is extremely weak.

The behavior of n-Si(111) photoanodes covered by monolayer sheets of fluorinated graphene (F-Gr) was investigated under a range of chemical and electrochemical conditions. The electrochemical behavior of n-Si/F-Gr and np(+)-Si/F-Gr photoanodes was compared to hydride-terminated n-Si (n-Si-H) and np(+)-Si-H electrodes in contact with aqueous Fe(CN)6(3-/4-) and Br2/HBr electrolytes as well as in contact with a series of outer-sphere, one-electron redox couples in nonaqueous electrolytes. Illuminated n-Si/F-Gr and np(+)-Si/F-Gr electrodes in contact with an aqueous K3(Fe(CN)6/K4(Fe(CN)6 solutions exhibited stable short-circuit photocurrent densities of ∼10 mA cm(-2) for 100,000 s (>24 h), in comparison to bare Si electrodes, which yielded nearly a complete photocurrent decay over ∼100 s.
