Cytoreductive surgery with heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC) remains a controversial treatment for malignant disease of the peritoneal cavity. We review the scientific principles underscoring the rationale for CRS/HIPEC, recent innovations and ongoing controversies. Lack of level 1 data limits the understanding of the true benefit of CRS/HIPEC.

In clinics, physical injuries to the spinal cord cause a temporary motor areflexia below lesion, known as spinal shock. This topic is still underexplored due to the lack of preclinical spinal cord injury (SCI) models that do not use anesthesia, which would affect spinal excitability. Our innovative design considered a custom-made micro impactor that provides localized and calibrated strikes to the ventral surface of the thoracic spinal cord of the entire CNS isolated from neonatal rats.

Multimedia learning theory suggests that the use of images in the classroom enhances both cognitive and constructive learning. Finding the appropriate images for medical presentations can be challenging due to copyright and privacy issues. Artificial intelligence (AI) image generation is a newly available technology that offers a great advantage to medical educators.

Purpose: At LUMC, a Small Private Online Course (SPOC) was developed complementary to the clinical learning environment of the internal medicine clerkship. The developers used the self-determination theory in the design of the SPOC's assignments aiming to improve learners' intrinsic motivation. This study investigates the impact of the SPOC and its specific assignments on student motivation.

Purpose: To investigate the predictive value of 2-[18F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose ([F]FDG) PET/CT for evaluating primary tumor (PT) and lymph node (LN) responses after neoadjuvant programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) blockade monotherapy in patients with locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (LA-ESCC).
Methods: In the single-arm phase 1b NATION-1907 trial (NCT04215471), 23 patients with LA-ESCC received two cycles of neoadjuvant PD-L1 blockade Adebrelimab followed by surgery. Among these, 18 patients underwent [F]FDG PET/CT scans both before immunotherapy and prior to surgery.

Background: Most postgraduate medical education tracks are faculty-led and emphasise teaching skills. A peer-to-peer medical education track focused on curriculum development and scholarship is notably underrepresented in the literature, especially within graduate medical education. To address these gaps, a 2-year Distinction in Medical Education (DIME) track was developed.
