The sustained imbalance between oxidant and antioxidant species contributes to lung damage in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Glutathione (GSH) is an important component of the antioxidant defense in the airways epithelial lining fluid and its transportation out of the cells may be altered in CF. The aim of this study was to assess the oxidants/antioxidants balance in the airways of patients with CF. We measured the concentrations of GSH, the total antioxidant capacity and the concentration of 8-iso-prostaglandin F (8-isoprostane), a marker of oxidative stress, in the exhaled breath condensate of 17 non-smoking patients with CF, in stable phase, and in 17 age-matched healthy subjects. The levels of GSH and total antioxidant capacity in patients with CF were significantly lower than in healthy subjects (0.66 ± 0.07 μM versus 1.30 ± 0.08 μM, p < 0.001, respectively for GSH; 0.157 ± 0.02 mM and 0.32 ± 0.01 mM, p < 0.05, respectively for antioxidant capacity). The concentration of 8-isoprostane was higher in CF than in healthy controls (26.5 ± 0.1 pg ml versus 10.8 ± 0.1 pg ml; p < 0.05). A low concentration of antioxidant agents, particularly glutathione, and increased levels of 8-isoprostane in the exhaled breath suggest an altered oxidizing environment in the airways of patients with CF. This altered redox environment in the epithelial liquid surface may contribute to progressive lung disease.

Diabetic wound healing remains a major challenge in modern medicine. The persistent inflammation and immune dysfunction hinder angiogenesis by producing excessive ROS and increasing the susceptibility to bacterial infection. In this study, we developed an integrated strategy for whole-process management of diabetic wounds based on a bioinspired adhesive hydrogel platform with hemostasis, photothermal antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and angiogenic properties.

Selective breeding is a potent method for developing strains with enhanced traits. This study compared the growth performance and stress responses of the genetically improved Abbassa Nile tilapia strain (G9; GIANT-G9) with a local commercial strain over 12 weeks, followed by exposure to stressors including high ammonia (10 mg TAN/L), elevated temperature (37 °C), and both for three days. The GIANT-G9 showed superior growth, including greater weight gain, final weight, length gain, specific growth rate, and protein efficiency ratio, as well as a lower feed conversion ratio and condition factor compared to the commercial strain.

Disproportion between reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and the body's antioxidant system can cause oxidative stress, which is considered a common denominator in various pathological conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, aging, and cognitive disorders. The generation of free radicals, which occurs through partial reduction of oxygen, can quickly overwhelm the endogenous antioxidant system capacity of the cell. This causes lipid, protein, DNA and RNA damage, inflammation, and overall cell degeneration, which can be mitigated by various antioxidants.

This study investigated the impacts of hot water treatment (HWT) at 50°C or 25°C for 5 min and high-temperature ethylene (HTE) exposure at varying temperatures (20°C, 30°C, or 35°C) and durations (24, 48, or 72 h) on the postharvest quality and antioxidant properties of mature green tomatoes (MG). Color changes, physicochemical characteristics, antioxidant compounds, and overall antioxidant ability were assessed. HWT increased β-carotene levels and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) while preserving color metrics, despite later HTE exposure.

Maejo 341 Sweet potato (MSP) is a new purple sweet potato variety cultivated in Northern Thailand, but its health benefits are unknown. This study aimed to investigate its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-osteoporotic activities, as well as its anthocyanin content. The peel and flesh of MSP were extracted with ethanol and water.
