Most commercially available electrochemical enzyme sensor strips for the measurement of blood glucose use an artificial electron mediator to transfer electrons from the active side of the enzyme to the electrode. One mediator recently gaining attention for commercial sensor strips is hexaammineruthenium(III) chloride. In this study, we investigate and compare the preference of enzyme electrodes with two different FAD-dependent glucose dehydrogenases (FADGDHs) for the mediators hexaammineruthenium(III) chloride, potassium ferricyanide (the most common mediator in commercial sensor strips), and methoxy phenazine methosulfate (mPMS). One FADGDH is a monomeric fungal enzyme, and the other a hetero-trimeric bacterial enzyme. With the latter, which contains a heme-subunit facilitating the electron transfer, similar response currents are obtained with hexaammineruthenium(III), ferricyanide, and mPMS (6.8 µA, 7.5 µA, and 6.4 µA, respectively, for 10 mM glucose). With the fungal FADGDH, similar response currents are obtained with the negatively charged ferricyanide and the uncharged mPMS (5.9 µA and 6.7 µA, respectively, for 10 mM glucose), however, no response current is obtained with hexaammineruthenium(III), which has a strong positive charge. These results show that access of even very small mediators with strong charges to a buried active center can be almost completely blocked by the protein.

A core dielectric cylindrical rod wrapped in a dielectric circular pipe whose outer surface is enclosed by a helical conducting strip grating that is skewed along the axial direction is herein analyzed using the asymptotic strip boundary conditions along with classical vector potential analysis. Targeted for use as a cylindrical holographic antenna, the resultant field solutions facilitate the aperture integration of the equivalent cylindrical surface currents to obtain the radiated far fields. As each rod section of a certain skew angle exhibits a distinct modal attribute; this topology allows for the distribution of the cylindrical surface impedance via the effective refractive index to be modulated, as in gradient-index (GRIN) materials.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has a high incidence rate, and if not detected and treated in a timely manner, it poses a risk of progressing to renal failure and even uremia. Performing home monitoring of urinary protein, which is a recognized indicator of CKD, is considered an effective means of achieving early warning for CKD. Although the existing urinary protein test strips for home self-testing are cost-effective and simple, they suffer from drawbacks such as susceptibility to contamination and lack of quantitative detection capability.

The authors previously developed an online thin film buckling configuration determination method for a mini basket type mapping catheter prototype, which incorporates eight thin film sensor strips. In the prior study, no external force was applied to the thin film, and only axial displacement was adjusted to induce buckling in the thin film. Extending this prior work, a preliminary methodological validation is conducted for an online configuration determination method of thin film buckling under a point contact force.

Hen egg-white lysozyme (HEWL) is commonly used in food preservation and as a substitute for sulfur dioxide in wine production and to prevent late blowing defects in cheese production. However, HEWL is an egg allergen that can cause severe allergic reactions in allergic individuals after accidental ingestion. Therefore, in order to prevent life-threatening health problems caused by consumer allergies, we developed an extremely specific gold immunochromatographic assay (GICA) tolerant to matrix effects for the qualification and quantification of HEWL in food products.

Detections towards multiple analytes by one sensor remain a significant challenges. Herein, a high-sensitivity chemo-sensor ICZ-o-XFJ is designed and synthesized for the simultaneous detection of F and Al. Suffering from the ESIPT process, this sensor is colorless and almost non-emissive in solutions.
