Obesity is one of the major global health problems. Melatonin deficiency has been demonstrated to correlate with obesity. The aim of the study was to estimate the effect of melatonin on oxidative stress and adipokine levels in obese patients on a calorie-restricted diet. Thirty obese patients were supplemented with a daily dose of 10 mg of melatonin ( = 15) or placebo ( = 15) for 30 days with a calorie-restricted diet. Serum levels of melatonin, 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE), adiponectin, omentin-1, leptin, and resistin, as well as erythrocytic malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration and Zn/Cu-superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities, were measured at baseline and after supplementation. Significant body weight reduction was observed only in the melatonin group. After melatonin supplementation, the adiponectin and omentin-1 levels and GPx activities statistically increased, whereas the MDA concentrations were reduced. In the placebo group, a significant rise in the HNE and a drop in the melatonin concentrations were found. The results show evidence of increased oxidative stress accompanying calorie restriction. Melatonin supplementation facilitated body weight reduction, improved the antioxidant defense, and regulated adipokine secretion. The findings strongly suggest that melatonin should be considered in obesity management. This trial is registered with CTRI/2017/07/009093.

Melatonin (MT), an endogenous hormone secreted by pineal gland, has the sedative, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant functions. However, there are few studies on whether MT affects the proliferation and differentiation of antler chondrocytes. The present study investigated the influences of MT on the proliferation and differentiation of antler chondrocytes, explored its regulation on runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), NOTCH1 and sonic hedgehog (SHH) signaling, and elucidated their interplays.

Purpose: Previous studies that evaluated the influence of melatonin supplementation on cancer-related fatigue (CRF) revealed inconsistent results. The present meta-analysis was performed to systematically evaluate the influence of melatonin on the severity of fatigue in patients with cancer.

Methods: Relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were acquired by conducting a comprehensive search in the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases.

Obesity causes fat accumulation, and sarcopenia causes loss of muscle mass and strength; together, they worsen insulin resistance and accelerate muscle decline, creating a harmful cycle. Some supplements, along with physical exercise, could be remedies for sarcopenic obesity (SO). In this review, we aim to draw a comparison between supplements studied in experimental research and those evaluated in clinical studies for SO.

We hypothesized that melatonin (Mel) supplementation may offer therapeutic benefits for obesity, particularly in women. Therefore, the study evaluated Mel's effects on white adipose tissue (WAT) in diet-induced obese female mice. Four-week-old C57BL/6 females were assigned to either a control diet (C group) or a high-fat diet (HF group) for 6 weeks (n = 20/group).

Melatonin, a pleiotropic hormone plays a vital role in enhancing livestock performance not only by regulating circadian rhythms but also by exhibiting antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and metabolic regulatory effects that collectively improve resilience, fertility, and productivity. Melatonin's synthesis is predominantly influenced by light exposure, with increased production in darkness; however, factors such as diet and health status further modulate its levels. By helping animals adapt to environmental stressors, melatonin boosts immune responses, mitigates chronic illnesses, and optimizes production efficiency.
