Initial Data for Numerical Relativity.

Published: November 2000

Initial data are the starting point for any numerical simulation. In the case of numerical relativity, Einstein's equations constrain our choices of these initial data. We will examine several of the formalisms used for specifying Cauchy initial data in the 3 + 1 decomposition of Einstein's equations. We will then explore how these formalisms have been used in constructing initial data for spacetimes containing black holes and neutron stars. In the topics discussed, emphasis is placed on those issues that are important for obtaining astrophysically realistic initial data for compact binary coalescence.

A recent study design for clinical trials with small sample sizes is the small n, sequential, multiple assignment, randomized trial (snSMART). An snSMART design has been previously proposed to compare the efficacy of two dose levels versus placebo. In such a trial, participants are initially randomized to receive either low dose, high dose or placebo in stage 1.

COVID-19 impact on HIV PrEP uptake and retention at selected health facilities in Eswatini.

Afr J Prim Health Care Fam Med

December 2024

School of Public Health, Faculty of Community and Health Sciences, University of the Western Cape, Cape Town.

Background:  Oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uses antiretroviral medication to reduce HIV risk in HIV-negative individuals. Despite its effectiveness, global uptake faces policy and accessibility challenges. In Eswatini, PrEP introduction in 2017 showed promise despite stigma and COVID-19 disruptions.

Development and validation of a UV-Vis spectrophotometric method for estimation of total content of chalcone.

MethodsX

June 2025

Observatory of Drug-Herb Interactions, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Coimbra, Health Science Campus, Azinhaga Santa Comba, Coimbra, Portugal.

In this study, a straightforward spectrophotometric method was developed for quantifying the total content of chalcones in a sample. The method exhibits linearity, accuracy, precision, repeatability, and enables the estimation of total chalcone content in trans-chalcone equivalents for a sample diluted in carbon tetrachloride and added to antimony pentachloride. The analytical wavelength was determined to be 390 nm.

Background: Operative mortality for high-grade liver injury (HGLI) remains 42% to 66%, with near-universal mortality after retrohepatic caval injury. The objective of this study was to evaluate mortality and complications of operative and nonoperative management (OM and NOM) of HGLI at our institution, characterized by a trauma surgery-liver surgery collaborative approach to trauma care.

Methods: This was an observational cohort study of adult patients (age ≥16) with HGLI (The American Association for Surgery of Trauma (AAST) grades IV and V) admitted to an urban level I trauma center from January 2010 to November 2021.

Background: Financial toxicity refers to financial hardship experienced because of illness or injury. Poverty is a known driver of community violence, but financial toxicity has not been studied in firearm violence survivors. The objective of our study was to explore the financial needs of firearm violence survivors enrolled in a hospital-based violence intervention program (HVIP).
