The highest known actinide oxidation states are Np(VII) and Pu(VII), both of which have been identified in solution and solid compounds. Recently a molecular Np(VII) complex, NpO(NO), was prepared and characterized in the gas phase. In accord with the lower stability of heptavalent Pu, no Pu(VII) molecular species has been identified. Reported here are the gas-phase syntheses and characterizations of NpO and PuO. Reactivity studies and density functional theory computations indicate the heptavalent metal oxidation state in both. This is the first instance of Pu(VII) in the absence of stabilizing effects due to condensed phase solvation or crystal fields. The results indicate that addition of an electron to neutral PuO, which has a computed electron affinity of 2.56 eV, counterintuitively results in oxidation of Pu(V) to Pu(VII), concomitant with superoxide reduction.

The analysis of the solution absorption spectrum of the plutonyl ion in an aqueous environment was given by Eisenstein and Pryce (E&P) in 1968. In 2011 a new spectrum was published of the (PuO) ion in 1 M HClO. We have been provided with the original data of this spectrum and have found in the data a previously unreported low-lying transition at 7385 cm which we have assigned as a magnetic dipole transition.

Uranyl diacetate dihydrate is a useful reagent for the preparation of uranyl (UO) coordination complexes, as it is a well-defined stoichiometric compound featuring moderately basic acetates that can facilitate protonolysis reactivity, unlike other anions commonly used in synthetic actinide chemistry such as halides or nitrate. Despite these attractive features, analogous neptunium (Np) and plutonium (Pu) compounds are unknown to date. Here, a modular synthetic route is reported for accessing stoichiometric neptunyl(VI) and plutonyl(VI) diacetate compounds that can serve as starting materials for transuranic coordination chemistry.

A detailed analysis of the wave functions for the M to 5f excitations in the linear actinyls, UO, NpO, and PuO, and the theoretical X-ray absorption spectra obtained with these wave functions in comparison with experimental M-edge high-resolution X-ray absorption near-edge structure (HR-XANES) spectra is presented. The wave functions include full treatment of scalar and spin-orbit relativistic effects through the use of a Dirac-Coulomb Hamiltonian; many-body effects are included in determining the wave functions. The character of the excited states and of the active spaces to describe the wave functions for these states are investigated and analyzed.

A detailed analysis is presented for the covalent character of the orbitals in the actinyls: UO, NpO, and PuO. Both the initial, or ground state, GS, configuration and the excited configurations where a 3d electron is excited into the open valence, nominally the 5f shell, are considered. The orbitals are determined as fully relativistic, four component Dirac-Coulomb Hartree-Fock solutions.
