The window of embryonic development after fertilization but prior to the beginning of transcription from the zygotic genome is a period that relies heavily on post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. MicroRNAs constitute one of the predominant mechanisms of post-transcriptional gene regulation, yet their biological function and molecular mechanism of action during this developmental window is poorly understood. Our recent findings demonstrate that the maternal contribution of mir-35 family members contributes to zygotic developmental decisions (sex determination) in C. elegans embryogenesis. Here, I discuss these finding in the context of data from C. elegans and other model organisms regarding the regulation of maternal microRNA activity in early animal embryogenesis.

Background: Birth asphyxia is a critical condition caused by an insufficient oxygen supply during delivery, and it poses a major threat to the health of newborns. The present meta-analysis aimed to estimate the prevalence of birth asphyxia among neonates and identify its risk factors in China.
Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, the China Academic Journals (CNKI), the Chinese Biomedical Literature (CBM), the China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), and the WanFang database were searched for related publications.

Background: Despite the integration of iron supplementation into routine antenatal care programs as a nutritional intervention to prevent anemia in pregnant women, the use of this supplement for the recommended duration remains low in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Evidence on maternal compliance with iron supplementation at the SSA level is lacking and most of the previous studies have been limited to specific geographic areas. Therefore, the current study used large population survey data from 35 SSA countries to estimate the pooled prevalence of non-adherence and its determinants.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are linked to preeclampsia (PE), a condition involving abnormal angiogenesis. Prior research on this association has been inconclusive. We investigated the relationship between maternal PFAS exposure and PE risk in Wisconsin.

Exposure to environmental pollutants during pregnancy can adversely affect fetal growth and postnatal development. While numerous studies have explored the interaction between environmental toxic chemicals and the folate pathway, few have examined their inhibitory effects on key targets. This computational study identified 27 maternal environmental toxicants using the Comparative Toxicogenomics Database (CTD) and analyzed them to identify their targets.

Objective: In recent years, the management of placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) has fallen into two categories: planned hysterectomy and conservative management to preserve fertility. However, optimal management remains unclear. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis comparing the two to evaluate which approach was associated with lower surgical morbidity.
