Grape seed proanthocyanidins (GSPs) have been reported to possess a wide array of pharmacological and biochemical properties. Recently, GSPs have been reported to inhibit various types of colorectal cancer; however, the mechanism(s) involved remain unclear. The present study investigated the effects of GSPs on HCT-116 human colorectal carcinoma cell line. Exposure of these cells to GSPs for 48 h resulted in a significant concentration-dependent inhibition of cell viability. Further investigation indicated that GSPs induced apoptosis of these cells. Analyses of mRNA expression levels using reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction and protein expression levels by western blotting revealed that this was associated with increased expression levels of p53 tumor suppressor protein, cytochrome , and pro-apoptotic proteins, apoptosis regulator Bax (Bax) and Bcl-2 homologous antagonist/killer. Furthermore, decreased expression levels of the anti-apoptotic protein, B cell lymphoma-2 and activation of caspase-2, caspase-3 and caspase-9 were demonstrated. GSP-induced loss of mitochondrial membrane potential was also detected by JC-1 assay. These findings suggested that GSPs induced colon cancer cell apoptosis via the mitochondrial signaling pathway. This provided evidence indicating that GSPs may provide potential chemotherapeutic agents for colorectal cancer.

Background: Bioinformatics analysis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) expression profiles can aid in understanding its molecular mechanisms and identifying new targets for diagnosis and treatment.
Aim: In this study, we analyzed expression profile datasets and miRNA expression profiles related to HCC from the GEO using R software to detect differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and differentially expressed miRNAs (DEmiRs).
Methods And Results: Common DEGs were identified, and a PPI network was constructed using the STRING database and Cytoscape software to identify hub genes.

Metabolism is the name given to all of the chemical reactions in the cell involving thousands of proteins, including enzymes, receptors, and transporters. Inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) are caused by defects in the production and breakdown of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Micro ribonucleic acids (miRNAs) are short non-coding RNA molecules, ⁓19-25 nucleotides long, hairpin-shaped, produced from DNA.

Background: Cardiac ischemia/reperfusion disrupts plasma membrane integrity and induces various types of programmed cell death. The ESCRT (endosomal sorting complex required for transport) proteins, particularly AAA-ATPase Vps4a (vacuolar protein sorting 4a), play an essential role in the surveillance of membrane integrity. However, the role of ESCRT proteins in the context of cardiac injury remains unclear.

Background: The WHO has highlighted that: "promotion of e-cigarettes has led to marked increases in e-cigarette use by children and adolescents." The long-term neuropsychiatric and psychological consequences of substance abuse in adolescence is well recognised. Limited data exists on the adolescent burden of vaping-related nicotine addiction and behavioural and/or psychological dependence to guide pharmacological or behavioural interventions to stop electronic cigarette usage.
