In this latex immunoassay for human placental lactogen, microtiter plates are used as the reaction vessel and the absorbance at 405 nm is measured to quantify the reactions. This 30-min assay necessitates only one serum dilution and two pipetting steps. The calibration curve extends from 0.5 to 15 mg/L. CVs range from 4.2% to 7.0% for within-run determination and from 7.0% to 11.2% for between-run determinations. A correlation coefficient of 0.949 was obtained for 84 sera when the method was compared with a commercial radioimmunoassay.

Introduction: Serum cystatin C (CysC) is used to estimate glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), including in the Chronic Kidney Disease in Children (CKiD) Under 25 years (U25eGFR) equations. Several CysC measurement procedures available from diagnostic vendors include reference material for calibration, but the extent of heterogeneity across manufacturers is unclear. Since heterogeneity may have clinical and research implications for eGFR, we evaluated three CysC procedures in samples from the CKiD study representing a wide spectrum of kidney function.

Objectives: To describe a variant hemoglobin that interferes with HbA analysis by cation exchange HPLC.
Case Presentation: A 78 years-old Spanish male patient visited the Internal Medicine Clinic for a routine check-up, with HbA included to screen for diabetes. He had suffered hypertension and dyslipidemia, and the patient had no previous symptoms suggestive of diabetes such as hyperglycemia, weight loss, polydipsia, polyuria or tiredness.

The recent large outbreaks of Ebola virus disease in West Africa and the Democratic Republic of the Congo have highlighted the need for rapid diagnostic tests to control this disease. In this chapter, the development of immunochromatographic lateral flow assays to detect filovirus nucleoproteins is described as an example of designing rapid diagnostic tests.
