Transcription of DNA by RNA polymerase (RNAP) takes place in a cell environment dominated by thermal fluctuations. How are transcription reactions including initiation, elongation, and termination on genomic DNA so well-controlled during such fluctuations? A recent statistical mechanical approach using high-throughput sequencing data reveals that repetitive DNA sequence elements embedded into a genomic sequence provide the key mechanism to functionally bias the fluctuations of transcription elongation complexes. In particular, during elongation pausing, such repetitive sequence elements can increase the magnitude of one-dimensional diffusion of the RNAP enzyme on the DNA upstream of the pausing site, generating a large variation in the dwell times of RNAP pausing under the control of these genomic signals.

The upper ocean provides thermal energy to tropical cyclones. However, the impacts of the subsurface ocean on tropical cyclogenesis have been largely overlooked. Here, we show that the subsurface variabilities associated with the variation in the 26 °C isothermal depth have pronounced impacts on tropical cyclogenesis over global oceans.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of laminarin (LA) and ferulic acid (FA) on the gelatinization, rheological properties, freeze-thaw stability, and digestibility of cassava starch (CS). The results indicated that LA increased the peak viscosity, trough viscosity, final viscosity, storage modulus, and loss modulus of CS, while decreasing the breakdown viscosity. The theoretical study of instabilities, thermal fluctuations, and topological defects in the crystal-rotator-I-rotator-II (X-R-R) phase transitions of -alkanes has been conducted.
