Objectives: The aim of this study is to explore current community emergency department (ED) experiences available to pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) trainees and estimate the proportion of graduates taking positions that involve working in a community ED setting.

Methods: We conducted an e-mail-based survey among PEM fellowship directors and assistant directors.

Results: There were 55 program director respondents (74% response rate). Thirty-one percent of the surveyed PEM fellowship programs provide training exposure to a community ED setting. Twenty-nine percent of the surveyed programs reported that 25% to 49% of graduating trainees accepted positions that involve working in a community hospital ED setting, 13% responded 50% to 74%, and 4% report 75% to 100% from 2012 to 2016.

Conclusions: There is an overall paucity of a dedicated community rotation for PEM trainees, yet many graduates are seeking employment in community-based EDs. Because the need for community-based PEM physicians continues to rise and to adequately prepare the PEM workforce, PEM fellowship training should consider a curriculum that includes community-based ED clinical experiences.

Objective: Pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) fellowship directors can interview candidates from either pediatric or EM residency programs. Currently, most candidates are pediatricians; however, because emergency physicians have attributes that could benefit PEM, our goal was to investigate facilitators and barriers to training more of them to become PEM physicians.

Methods: We surveyed U.

In the process of using thin-film thermocouples for contact measurement of the reaction temperature in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), the impact of thin-film thermocouple volume on the system's reaction temperature field variation, reaction efficiency, and the lifespan of thermocouples under these conditions is not thoroughly studied. Using magnetron sputtering technology, NiCr/NiSi thin-film thermocouples (NiCr/NiSi TFTCs) with different junction sizes were fabricated on the proton exchange membrane (PEM). These NiCr/NiSi TFTCs exhibit excellent compactness, with thickness and planar dimensions in the micrometer range.

Article Synopsis
  • Pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) fellows need to master high-risk procedures like central venous catheter placement, endotracheal intubation, and tube thoracostomy, which are often not taught during residency.
  • A simulation-based mastery learning (SBML) curriculum was implemented for teaching key procedures like lumbar puncture and endotracheal intubation, including assessments and hands-on practice.
  • After training, all fellows achieved competency in critical procedures, highlighting SBML as an effective method for enhancing procedural skills in PEM training.

Background: In many centers, pediatric radiology-performed ultrasound and/or POCUS fellowship training are not readily available.

Objective: To present our experience using point of care ultrasound (POCUS) in a pediatric emergency medicine training program without POCUS fellowship-trained staff, and to demonstrate that POCUS of the appendix is feasible outside the context for POCUS fellowship training.

Methods: We identified children diagnosed with appendicitis or periappendiceal abscess from June 2016 to June 2024.

Objectives: Point-of-care-ultrasound (POCUS) is increasingly used by pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) fellows, but scant data exists on the accuracy of exam interpretations. Our goal was to determine whether agreement on exam interpretation between quality assurance (QA) faculty (reference standard) and PEM fellows varied by fellowship year or exam type.

Methods: Retrospective review of fellow-performed POCUS exams between January 2019 and June 2022.
