Acoustic reciprocity is a fundamental property of acoustic wavefields that is commonly used to simplify the measurement process of many practical applications. Traditionally, the reciprocity theorem is defined between a monopole point source and a point receiver. Intuitively, it must apply to more complex transducers than monopoles. In this paper, the authors formulate the acoustic reciprocity theory in the spherical harmonics domain for directional sources and directional receivers with higher order directivity patterns.

To measure the electroacoustic parameters of transducers in the continuous sound field in a limited water area, a reciprocity calibration method of hydrophones using a spatial sampling average method in a non-anechoic tank was developed. The sound propagation in the non-anechoic tank under the impedance boundary condition, with a sound source producing continuous sound, is introduced based on the Helmholtz equation and Green's function. The reciprocity constant is given using the spatial sampling average sound pressure, and the three-transducer reciprocity calibration procedure was established.

Magnetoelectric BAW and SAW Devices: A Review.

Micromachines (Basel)

December 2024

Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, Northeastern University, Boston, MA 02115, USA.

Magnetoelectric (ME) devices combining piezoelectric and magnetostrictive materials have emerged as powerful tools to miniaturize and enhance sensing and communication technologies. This paper examines recent developments in bulk acoustic wave (BAW) and surface acoustic wave (SAW) ME devices, which demonstrate unique capabilities in ultra-sensitive magnetic sensing, compact antennas, and quantum applications. Leveraging the mechanical resonance of BAW and SAW modes, ME sensors achieve the femto- to pico-Tesla sensitivity ideal for biomedical applications, while ME antennas, operating at acoustic resonance, allow significant size reduction, with high radiation gain and efficiency, which is suited for bandwidth-restricted applications.

Vibration and pressure pulsation elimination in a reciprocating compressor suction system using an acoustic filter.

Sci Rep

Gas Storage Management Department, PetroChina Southwest Oil and Gasfield Company, Chongqing, 401147, China.

High vibration poses significant safety and operational risks to compressor components. This study presents a thorough investigation of the root causes analysis and corrective actions to resolve vibration-induced failures faced on the suction system of a reciprocating compressor. Excessive pressure pulsations in the suction bottle and strong mechanical coupling between the cylinders and suction bottle due to high cylinder gas forces were identified as the root causes of vibration-induced failure of the suction system.

Non-Hermitian Skin Effect in Many-Body Thermophotonics.

ACS Nano

November 2024

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore, Kent Ridge, 117583 Republic of Singapore.

The tight-binding model, foundational in depicting electronic behaviors in solid-state physics, has recently contributed to the understanding of non-Hermitian skin effects in optics, acoustics, and mechanics. However, tight-binding model is primarily built upon scalar nearest couplings, which in turn does not fit to describe the vectorial long-range interactions inherently in thermophotonics. Here, we report a strategy involving many-body radiative interactions in a two-dimensional thermophotonic lattice, and further reveal two types of orthogonal non-Hermitian skin modes in a reciprocal system.
