The energy efficiency and compactness of an illumination system are two main concerns in illumination design for extended sources. In this paper, we present two methods to design compact, ultra efficient aspherical lenses for extended Lambertian sources in two-dimensional geometry. The light rays are directed by using two aspherical surfaces in the first method and one aspherical surface along with an optimized parabola in the second method. The principles and procedures of each design method are introduced in detail. Three examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of these two methods in terms of performance and capacity in designing compact, ultra efficient aspherical lenses. The comparisons made between the two proposed methods indicate that the second method is much simpler and easier to be implemented, and has an excellent extensibility to three-dimensional designs.

Low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy is a key method to probe electronic and magnetic properties down to the atomic scale, but suffers from extreme vibrational sensitivity. This makes it challenging to employ closed-cycle cooling with its required pulse-type vibrational excitations, albeit this is mandatory to avoid helium losses for counteracting the continuously raising helium prices. Here, we describe a compact ultra-high vacuum scanning tunneling microscope (STM) system with an integrated primary pulse tube cooler (PTC) for closed-cycle operation.

Nanoimprint lithography (NIL) has been broadly applied in the fabrication of nano-patterned polymer films for cost-efficiency and high through-put; however, the intrinsic tradeoff between mechanical strength and residual stress of polymer films significantly limits the NIL resolution while the harsh processing conditions limit its versatile applications to different substrates. Herein, 1 nm metal oxide cluster, phosphotungstic acid (PTA), is used to complexed with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) for high-resolution NIL that can be operated at large-scale and mild conditions. The ultra-small size of PTA enables dense supramolecular interaction with PVA for the diminished crystallinity and accelerated chain dynamics that help relax the residual stress during film casting.

The most common transducers used to generate ultrasound in medical applications are based on short electrical pulses applied to piezoelectric transducers and capacitive micromachined ultrasound transducers. However, piezoelectric transducers have a limited frequency bandwidth, defined by their physical thickness, and capacitive micromachined ultrasound transducers have poor transmission efficiency. The high frequency cutoff limits the spatial resolution of ultrasonic images.

The white neutron source driven by an electron accelerator utilizes a pulsed electron beam to bombard a target, producing neutrons through photoneutron reactions. The white neutron source of photoneutron reaction has advantages such as compact structure, low cost, capability of generating ultra-short pulse, and wide applications in the resonance energy region, effectively complementing reactor neutron sources and spallation neutron sources. The development of high-current, high-power electron accelerator-driven white neutron sources is of significant importance for neutron science research and nuclear technology applications.

Broadband metamaterial absorbers in the long wavelength infrared region are promising in applications including thermal imaging, cloaking, radiative cooling and IR signature suppression. Although high absorption over the long wavelength infrared region has been extensively achieved, the challenge is to shrink both the thickness and lateral footprint of unit absorbing structures. Here, a compact broadband long wavelength infrared metamaterial absorber consisting of multilayered Ge/Ti/Ge/SiO hybrid cylindrical structures, whose period and thickness are only ∼1.
