Flexible power sources with load bearing capability are attractive for modern wearable electronics. Here, free-standing supercapacitor fabrics that can store high electrical energy and sustain large mechanical loads are directly woven to be compatible with flexible systems. The prototype with reduced package weight/volume provides an impressive energy density of 2.58 mWh g or 3.6 mWh cm, high tensile strength of over 1000 MPa, and bearable pressure of over 100 MPa. The nanoporous thread electrodes are prepared by the activation of commercial carbon fibers to have three-orders of magnitude increase in the specific surface area and 86% retention of the original strength. The novel device configuration woven by solid electrolyte-coated threads shows excellent flexibility and stability during repeated mechanical bending tests. A supercapacitor watchstrap is used to power a liquid crystal display as an example of load-bearing power sources with various form-factor designs for wearable electronics.

The study reports solid-state ceramic supercapacitors (SSCs) assembled using a novel composite electrolyte based on Li ion conducting perovskite-type LLTO (LiLaTiO) and an ionic liquid (EMIM BF). Small amounts of various ionic liquids (ILs) were added to LLTO to enhance the ionic conductivity and improve electrode compatibility. The optimal composition with approximately ∼6 wt% EMIM BF in LLTO exhibited a high ionic conductivity of around ∼10 Ω cm at room temperature, nearly three orders of magnitude higher than that of the pristine LLTO.

The design and synthesis of multifunctional nanomaterials have attracted considerable attention for expanding the range of practical applications. Herein, a metal-organic framework (MOFs)-derived NiCoS attached to MXene is rationally designed and constructed for an optical limiter and supercapacitor. The MOF-derived NiCoS enhances the tendency of hydroxyl groups on the MXene surface to attract metal ions, resulting in the formation of sulfur vacancies.

This study presents the fabrication of highly conducting Au fabric electrodes using a layer-by-layer (LBL) approach and its application toward energy storage. Through the ligand-exchange mechanism, the alternating layers of tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (TREN) and gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) encapsulated with tetraoctylammonium bromide (TOABr) ligands (Au-TOABr) were deposited onto the fabric to achieve a highly conducting Au fabric (0.12 Ω/□) at room temperature in just two LBL cycles.

In this study, we demonstrate MXene (TiCT)-based coin-cell asymmetric supercapacitor (coin-cell ASC) exhibiting high energy density and high power density along with good capacitance. We synthesized mesoporous carbon (MC) by annealing alginic acid at varying temperatures (900 °C, 1000 °C and 1100 °C). Among the prepared samples, MC-1000 exhibited a highly porous structure and a higher surface area.

A binder-free and freestanding electrode was designed by uniformly immobilizing carbon quantum dot (CQD)-anchored polyaniline (PANI) heterostructures onto electrospun carbon nanofibers (CNFs) a facile hierarchical assembly process. The fabricated freestanding CNF/PANI/CQD electrode exhibits a unique three-dimensional (3D) network nanostructure, which accelerates ion migration between the interior and surface of the electrode, thereby enhancing its charging and discharging performance. Moreover, the functional groups on the surface of CQDs could anchor PANI through possible chemical bonding, which not only improves the stability of the PANI/CQD heterojunction but also creates an additional conductive channel for the PANI polymer.
