Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is an analytical technique capable of detecting trace amounts of specific species. The uniqueness of vibrational signatures is a major advantage of SERS. Background: Health systems across Europe are facing a workforce crisis, with some experiencing severe shortages of doctors. In response, many are exploring greater task-sharing, across established professions, such as doctors, nurses, and pharmacists, with patients and carers, and with new occupational groups, in particular ones that can assist doctors and relieve their workload.
Case Presentation: In the early 2000s the United Kingdom created a new occupational role, that of physician assistant.

Patients with cancer expect prolonged life (overall survival, OS) or better life (quality of life, QOL) from cancer treatments. However, majority of new cancer drugs are now being approved not based on improved OS or QOL, but based on surrogate endpoints such as tumor shrinkage or delayed tumor progression. These surrogate endpoints, including their validity as a proxy for overall survival, differ based on disease settings and lines of treatment but in general, most surrogate measures have weak correlation with outcomes that matter to patients.

The Advanced Cardiac Therapies Improving Outcomes Network (ACTION) registry collects data and adjudicates adverse events on pediatric patients receiving mechanical circulatory support at participating centers. To date, the registry includes over 1500 patients from 48 centers. Data collected has been used for research publications, quality improvement projects, and the regulatory support of several ventricular assist devices.
