Over the past decade, Mass Administration of Medicines (MAM) has been a key strategy for controlling schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STHs) in Anambra State, Nigeria. This longitudinal study, conducted from 2017 to 2019, evaluated the impact of interventions for controlling schistosomiasis (SCH) and STHs in recipient communities. A total of 1,046 pupils aged 5 to 16 years were enrolled, with Kato-Katz and urine filtration methods used for faecal and urine sample analysis.

Neglected tropical diseases are accelerating because of climate change and urbanization to create new clusters of vast urban areas beset by poverty and environmental degradation. These hot and contaminated megacities could enable the rise of parasitic and other tropical infections. A new generation of antiparasitic vaccines will be needed.

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections affect one-fourth of the global population and pose a significant threat to human and animal health, with limited treatment options and emerging drug resistance. (whipworm) stands out as a neglected disease, necessitating new drugs to address this unmet medical need. We discovered that several different chemical series of related human Provirus Integration sites for Moloney murine leukemia virus (PIM) family kinase inhibitors possess potent anthelmintic activity by using whole-worm motility assays.

Background: The Expanded Special Project for the Elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases (ESPEN) was launched in 2019 by the World Health Organization and African nations to combat Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), including Soil-transmitted helminths (STH), which still affect over 1.5 billion people globally. In this study, we present a comprehensive geostatistical analysis of publicly available STH survey data from ESPEN to delineate inter-country disparities in STH prevalence and its environmental drivers while highlighting the strengths and limitations that arise from the use of the ESPEN data.

Over the past decade, Anambra State, Nigeria, has implemented mass administration of medicines (MAMs) to combat soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH), a significant public health challenge in low-income regions. Nevertheless, these efforts have predominantly focused on pre-school and school-aged children, leaving a notable gap in understanding STH infection rates and the efficacy of these campaigns among secondary school adolescents, who have been excluded from this initiative. Our study aimed to address this critical knowledge gap by assessing soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) prevalence and contextual factors hindering effective control among adolescents in Anambra State, Nigeria.
