Nucleotide variability of mtDNA extracted from 144 isofemale lines collected in the whole range of D. simulans was analysed with 10-15 restriction enzymes and 73 lines were studied using one or a few enzymes. All clones were distributed into 3 mitochondrial genomes, siI, siII and siIII. These types are allopatric and can define geographic races. Mixed populations occur only in Madagascar and Réunion, where siII and siIII are found together. Among 40 sites detected with 10 enzymes, the variability of the coding region is extremely low, with one or no polymorphic restriction sites depending on the type. The control A + T-rich region is more variable in length and in restriction sites, and allows subtypes to be designated. Several lines were heteroplasmic for the length of the genome. These results are relevant to the evolutionary history of the species, its recent worldwide extension and to probable founder effects at the origin of each of the three types.

Pressure-induced phase transformations (PTs) in Si, the most important electronic material, have been broadly studied, whereas strain-induced PTs have never been studied in situ. Here, we reveal in situ various important plastic strain-induced PT phenomena. A correlation between the direct and inverse Hall-Petch effect of particle size on yield strength and pressure for strain-induced PT is predicted theoretically and confirmed experimentally for Si-I→Si-II PT.

Molecular dynamics simulations of nanoindentation tests on monocrystalline silicon (010) surface were conducted to investigate the mechanical properties and deformation mechanism from cryogenic temperature being 10 K to room temperature being 300 K. Furthermore, the load-displacement curves were obtained and the phase transformation was investigated at different temperatures. The results show that the phase transformation occurs both at cryogenic temperatures and at room temperature.

Linking the mitochondrial genotype and the organismal phenotype is of paramount importance in evolution of mitochondria. In this study, we determined the differences in catalytic properties of mitochondria dictated by divergences in the siII and siIII haplogroups of Drosophila simulans using introgressions of siII mtDNA type into the siIII nuclear background. We used a novel in situ method (permeabilized fibers) that allowed us to accurately measure the consumption of oxygen by mitochondria in constructed siII-introgressed flies and in siIII-control flies.
