We have recently proposed preferential binding by a cosolvent as the mechanism for chain collapse under co-non-solvency. Here we summarise our earlier works and provide further evidence that alcohol preferentially binds to PNIPAm, forming cosolvent bridges, and thus drives the transition. We also clarify some of the common misconceptions evoked in this debate with Pica and Graziano (PG), reinforcing the arguments of our earlier reply-comment [Soft Matter, 2017, 13, 2292] and published works.

In 2019, Italian National Institute of Health established an external quality assessment program (EQA) to evaluate the performance of oral fluid testing for classical and new psychoactive substances by laboratories participating in the National Early Warning System collaborative centres. This report presents the results of four rounds between 2019 and 2023. Eleven oral fluid specimens, including 3 blank samples, were prepared by adding different classes of and new psychoactive drugs at known concentrations to pre-screened drug-free oral fluid.

Elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs) are soluble in water at low temperature, but, on increasing the temperature, they undergo a reversible and cooperative, coil-to-globule collapse transition. It has been shown that the addition to water of either trimethylamine -oxide (TMAO), glycine, or betaine causes a significant decrease of T(collapse) in the case of a specific ELP. Traditional rationalizations of these phenomena do not work in the present case.

It is well established from the experimental point of view that the native state of globular proteins is more stable in heavy water than in water. No robust explanation, however, has been provided up to now. The application of the theoretical approach, originally devised to rationalize the general occurrence of cold denaturation, indicates that the magnitude of the solvent-excluded volume effect is slightly smaller in heavy water than in water and cannot explain the observed protein stabilization.
