Photosystem II (PSII) oxidizes water to produce oxygen through a four-step photocatalytic cycle. Understanding PSII structure-function relations is important for the development of biomimetic photocatalytic systems. The quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) analysis of substrate water binding to the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) has suggested a rearrangement of water ligands in a carousel mechanism around a key Mn center. Here, we find that the most recently reported X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) crystallographic data obtained for the dark-stable S state and the doubly flashed S state at 2.25 Å resolution support the carousel mechanism. The features in the XFEL data and QM/MM model-simulated difference Fourier maps suggest that water displacement may occur from the so-called "narrow" channel, resulting in binding of a new water molecule to the OEC, and thus provide new insights into the nature of rearrangements of water ligands along the catalytic cycle before O=O bond formation.

Comparison of Imaging Radar Configurations for Roadway Inspection and Characterization.

Sensors (Basel)

October 2023

IETR (Institut d'Électronique et des Technologies du numéRique), UMR CNRS 6164, Nantes Université, F-44000 Nantes, France.

This paper investigates the performance of a wide variety of radar imaging modes, such as nadir-looking B-scan, or side-looking synthetic aperture radar tomographic acquisitions, performed in both back- and forward-scattering geometries, for the inspection and characterization of roadways. Nadir-looking B-scan corresponds to a low-complexity mode exploiting the direct return from the response, whereas side-looking configurations allow the utilization of angular and polarimetric diversity in order to analyze advanced features. The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the ability of each configuration, independently of aspects related to operational implementation, to discriminate and localize shallow underground defects in the wearing course of roadways, and to estimate key geophysical parameters, such as roughness and dielectric permittivity.

The Type IX Secretion System and Its Role in Bacterial Function and Pathogenesis.

J Dent Res

April 2022

Oral Health CRC, Melbourne Dental School, Bio21 Institute, The University of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

, and species found in severe periodontitis use the Type IX Secretion System (T9SS) to load their outer membrane surface with an array of virulence factors. These virulence factors are then released on outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), which penetrate the host to dysregulate the immune response to establish a positive feedback loop of chronic, inflammatory destruction of the tooth's supporting tissues. In this review, we present the latest information on the molecular architecture of the T9SS and provide mechanistic insight into its role in secretion and attachment of cargo proteins to produce a virulence coat on cells and OMVs.

Schizophrenia is severe neuropsychiatric disease, which is commonly accompanied not only by positive or negative symptoms, but also by cognitive impairment. To study neuronal mechanisms underlying cognitive distortions and mechanisms underlying schizophrenia, animal pharmacological models of cognitive symptoms are commonly used. Between various cognitive impairments in schizophrenia patients, disturbed time perception has often been reported.

Anemia has been identified as a significant negative prognosticator in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). Irrespective of the causes, anemia in HNSCC is believed to contribute to intratumoral hypoxia, which reduces the effectiveness of radiotherapy and oxygen-dependent chemotherapy. Correction of anemia with recombinant human erythropoietin (rHu-EPO) has been performed as a surrogate for hypoxia compensation to improve tumor control and survival outcomes.

Use of content management systems to address nursing workflow.

Int J Nurs Sci

October 2019

Health Carousel, LLC., OH, USA.

Nurses are at the forefront of providing healthcare services to individuals of all age groups and with varying medical conditions. Aside from the critical knowledge and technical skills from nursing science, advancement in technology has assisted nurses in delivering quality nursing care by streamlining workflow processes and ensuring that data can easily be retrieved or modified. Electronic health records dramatically changed the landscape of the healthcare practice by providing an electronic means to store data and for healthcare professionals to retrieve and manipulate health information in a secured and collaborative environment.
