Objective: To report ocular examination findings before and after total ear canal ablation and lateral bulla osteotomy (TECALBO) and ventral bulla osteotomy (VBO) in cats and dogs.

Methods: At The Ohio State University and MedVet Columbus, ophthalmic examinations were performed on client-owned animals for which a TECALBO or VBO was indicated. Examination findings and postoperative complications relating to ophthalmic and/or neuro-ophthalmic diseases were recorded prior to surgery (T0) and at 1 day (T1), 2 to 3 weeks (T14), and ± 2 months (T60) postoperatively.

Article Synopsis
  • The study reports the first transmission electron microscopic findings from a case of whole corneal descemetocele following an infectious corneal ulcer in a 72-year-old male patient.
  • After treating the infection, a corneoscleral transplant was performed, and the thin excised corneal membrane was examined under an electron microscope, revealing two distinct cell types and various cell junctions.
  • The findings showed no endothelial cells or significant presence of Descemet membrane, leading to the conclusion that the term "descemetocele" may not accurately apply in this case.

Purpose: To report a challenging case of corneal descemetocele following Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy for posterior capsule opacification in a patient with Steven Johnson syndrome (SJS).

Observations: A single-eye 52 year-old man, with a history of Steven Johnson syndrome, presented with severe eye pain and profound vision reduction in his left eye two days after undergoing Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy using the standard Abraham contact lens. A corneal descemetocele was identified and subsequently confirmed by anterior segment optical coherence tomography.

Management of nonhealing corneal ulcers is challenging as it can lead to complications such as melting, descemetocele, and perforation, which can be prevented by amniotic membrane graft (AMG). The absence of any review (English language) on AMG for corneal ulcers prompted us to conduct this review. We looked for clinical trials (randomized and controlled) on the effect of AMG combined with other treatments, through various search engines utilizing the terms amniotic membrane and corneal ulcer.
