A new recombinant norovirus GII.P16-GII.2 outnumbered pandemic GII.4 as the predominant GII genotype in the winter of 2016-2017 in Hong Kong, China. Half of hospitalized case-patients were older children and adults, including 13 young adults. This emergent norovirus targets a wider age population compared with circulating pandemic GII.4 strains.

The continually high disease burden of influenza and the relatively low effectiveness of current influenza vaccines call for enhanced vaccine strategies. We previously generated unique S-HA1 pseudovirus nanoparticles (PVNPs) displaying the receptor binding HA1 antigens of the H7N9 subtype as an influenza vaccine candidate and characterized their features in biochemistry, biophysics, structure, and immune response. In this follow up study, we created new S-HA1 PVNPs displaying the HA1 antigens of other common influenza viruses, including two H1N1 strains, one H3N2 strain, and an influenza B virus, respectively.

Accumulated data have shown that genogroup I (GI) NoVs not only cause sporadic cases but also cannot be ignored during outbreaks. This study aimed to update the genetic diversity of GI NoVs in the capital of China from 2014 to 2023.

Noroviruses (family Caliciviridae) are common causes of acute gastroenteritis worldwide. Multiple polymerase/capsid combinations have been identified among members of norovirus genogroup GII, at least 10 of which contain GII.P16 polymerase.

Norovirus (NoV) virus-like particles (VLPs) adjuvanted with aluminum hydroxide (Alum) are common vaccine candidates in clinical studies. Alum adjuvants usually inefficiently assist recombinant proteins to induce cellular immune responses. Thus, novel adjuvants are required to develop NoV vaccines that could induce both efficient humoral and robust cellular immune responses.
