Diffuse multibacillary leprosy of Lucio and Latapí is mainly reported in Mexico and Central America. We report a case in a 65-year-old man in Peru. He also had Lucio's phenomenon, characterized by vascular thrombosis and invasion of blood vessel walls by leprosy bacilli, causing extensive skin ulcers.

Background And Aim: subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) causes Johne's disease (paratuberculosis), which is a chronic wasting disease. No previous study has been found to investigate the coinfection of gastrointestinal parasites with paratuberculosis. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between paratuberculosis and gastrointestinal parasitism in naturally infected local Awassi (AS) and imported Tsurcana (TS) sheep.

The factors that determine the appearance of the different pathologic forms associated with bovine paratuberculosis are not fully understood, but new research suggests a critical role of innate immunity. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) trigger the recognition of invading pathogens by innate immune cells and the onset of specific immune responses. The aim of this work was to assess, immunohistochemically, the expression of TLR1, TLR2, TLR4, and TLR9 in intestinal samples of 20 cows showing different types of paratuberculous lesions: uninfected controls, focal lesions, paucibacillary, and multibacillary diffuse forms.

Article Synopsis
  • Leprosy is caused by two bacteria, Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepromatosis, which can't be easily grown in labs. This study focused on detecting M. lepromatosis in patients with various forms of leprosy, particularly those with type 2 reactions (ENL).
  • The research involved 75 multibacillary leprosy patients and used specific DNA extraction and sequencing techniques to confirm the presence of M. lepromatosis in their samples.
  • Results showed M. lepromatosis in four necrotic ENL patients, with varying levels of genetic similarity to known strains, and specific proteins from the bacteria were identified, supporting its role in leprosy cases studied

Background: Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis infected animals show a variety of granulomatous lesions, from focal forms with well-demarcated granulomas restricted to the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT), that are seen in the initial phases or latency stages, to a diffuse granulomatous enteritis, with abundant (multibacillary) or scant (paucibacillary) bacteria, seen in clinical stages. Factors that determine the response to the infection, responsible for the occurrence of the different types of lesion, are still not fully determined.

Hansen's disease is a well-described, largely historic infection that is caused by . Lucio's phenomenon is an aggressive, rare form of untreated lepromatous leprosy characterized by diffuse cutaneous lesions and systemic symptoms. To date, cases of necrotizing soft tissue infection in the setting of leprosy have rarely been reported in the literature.
