Perceptions of birth and wellbeing after birth debriefing among women who describe their birth as traumatic.

Midwifery

December 2024

Southern Cross University, Gold Coast Airport, Terminal Dr, Bilinga QLD 4225 Australia. Electronic address:

Introduction: In Australia, birth debriefing (BD) practices have primarily focused on clinical PTSD-FC, often neglecting the needs of mothers who describe their birth as traumatic but do not meet PTSD-FC criteria. The cessation of routine BD has overlooked a significant cohort- mothers experiencing subjective birth trauma (SBT). Their perceptions and wellbeing during the postpartum period remain poorly understood, and the lack of targeted interventions limits options for these mothers.

Operational environments are characterized by a range of psycho-physiological constraints that can degrade combatants' performance and impact on their long-term health. Neurofeedback training (NFT), a non-invasive, safe and effective means of regulating brain activity, has been shown to be effective for mental disorders, as well as for cognitive and motor capacities and aiding sports performance in healthy individuals. Its value in helping soldiers in operational condition or suffering from post-traumatic stress (PTSD) is undeniable, but relatively unexplored.

Racial Discrimination-related Interoceptive Network Disruptions: A Pathway to Disconnection.

Biol Psychiatry Cogn Neurosci Neuroimaging

December 2024

Emory University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Electronic address:

Background: Racial discrimination (RD) disrupts regulatory systems in minoritized individuals, particularly those that govern attention, including attention to visceral signals (interoception). RD frequency is linked to physiological "shut down" responses, characterized clinically by dissociation. We examined associations between RD frequency and functional connectivity of attention and interoceptive networks in sample of trauma-exposed Black women, investigating how connectivity alterations associate with dissociation severity.

Rat Models in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Research: Strengths, Limitations, and Implications for Translational Studies.

Pathophysiology

December 2024

Department of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan 430000, China.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a multifaceted psychiatric disorder triggered by traumatic events, leading to prolonged psychological distress and varied symptoms. Rat models have been extensively used to explore the biological, behavioral, and neurochemical underpinnings of PTSD. This review critically examines the strengths and limitations of commonly used rat models, such as single prolonged stress (SPS), stress-re-stress (S-R), and predator-based paradigms, in replicating human PTSD pathology.

Autistic/ADHD individuals are increasingly recognised as a valid minority group, with consistent research demonstrating a higher prevalence of co-occurring mental health conditions such as PTSD, anxiety, depression, substance use, and eating disorders among other mental health challenges. Due to this, there is increasing focus on the adaptations required for Autistic and ADHD individuals of current therapeutic approaches such as Schema Therapy. Particular emphasis when creating these adaptations needs to include looking at the developmental experiences, social influences, and continued adversity faced by Autistic and ADHD individuals across the lifespan, and how the narrative around Autism and ADHD within psychotherapy in general needs to change.
