Background: Abdominal CT imaging has defined characteristics of two pathological entities specific to peritoneal dialysis patients. Both are associated with serious peritoneal complications. One is comprised of ascites accompanied by septation and loculated fluid pockets as a complication of bacterial peritonitis. The other is the syndrome of encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis. We present the evolution of a single, thick-walled fluid collection as a consequence of relapsing peritonitis. The entity had distinctive features differing from either of the two previously described entities, and to our knowledge, has not been described previously. Our patient's radiological evolution resembled the formation of a pleural or peritoneal "rind."

Conclusion: Peritonitis, as a result of , may lead to "rind" formation as described with empyemas and is distinct from previously described intra-abdominal pathologies in peritoneal dialysis patients.

Diet quality components and gut microbiota of patients on peritoneal dialysis.

J Ren Nutr

January 2025

Division of Nephrology Universidade Federal de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil; Nutrition Program, Universidade Federal de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil. Electronic address:

Objective: To evaluate the associations between the quality of the diet and its components and microbial diversity and composition in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients.

Design And Methods: This crossectional study included PD patients for at least 3 months, aged 18-75 years and clinically stable. The Diet Quality Index (DQI), validated for the Brazilian population, is based on the energy density of 11 components ("sugar and sweets"; "beef, pork and processed meat"; "refined grains and breads"; "animal fat"; "poultry, fish and eggs"; "whole cereals, tubers and roots"; "fruits"; "non-starch vegetables"; "legumes and nuts"; "milk and dairy products"; "vegetable oil").

Introduction: Approximately 70% of patients with heart failure (HF) also have kidney disease. Mortality is increased both by cardiorenal syndrome (CRS) and by the exacerbation of other comorbidities. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical performance of patients with CRS who are followed up by the Cardiorenal Unit (CRU).

The incidence of inflow and drain pain and associated risk factors for patients on peritoneal dialysis.

BMC Nephrol

January 2025

Department of Nephrology, The First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, 58th, Zhongshan Road II, Guangzhou, 510080, Guangdong, PR China.

Background: The high prevalence and prolonged duration of inflow pain and drain pain experienced by peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients following PD catheter implantation impact their quality of life. However, there is limited data on the frequency and predisposing factors of these pains in the Chinese population undergoing peritoneal dialysis.

Methods: This study encompassed individuals who underwent peritoneal dialysis catheter implantation at our institution from September 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024.

Kidney replacement therapy (KRT) is one of the most energy-consuming and waste-producing medical treatments. Reducing the need of dialysis is therefore an environmentally friendly choice. However, preferring prevention, lifestyle-related interventions and patient education to drugs is time consuming and most physicians are already overburdened by the many demands of routine clinical practice.

Methylglyoxal-Stimulated Mesothelial Cells Prompted Fibroblast-to-Proto-Myofibroblast Transition.

Graduate Institute of Veterinary Medicine, School of Veterinary Medicine, National Taiwan University, Taipei 10617, Taiwan.

During long-term peritoneal dialysis, peritoneal fibrosis (PF) often happens and results in ultrafiltration failure, which directly leads to the termination of dialysis. The accumulation of extracellular matrix produced from an increasing number of myofibroblasts was a hallmark characteristic of PF. To date, glucose degradation products (GDPs, i.
