In this study, an anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) with seven chambers was applied to treat medium-strength synthetic industrial wastewater (MSIW). The performance of startup and shock test on treating MSIW was investigated. During the acclimation process, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of MSIW gradually increased from 0 to 2,000 mg L, and the COD removal finally reached 90%. At shock test, the feeding COD concentration increased by one-fifth and the reactor adapted very well with a COD removal of 82%. In a stable state, Comamonas, Smithella, Syntrophomonas and Pseudomonas were the main populations of bacteria, while the predominant methanogen was Methanobacterium. The results of chemical and microbiological analysis indicated the significant advantages of ABR, including buffering shocks, separating stages with matching microorganisms and promoting syntrophism. Meanwhile, the strategies for acclimation and operation were of great importance. Further work can test reactor performance in the treatment of actual industrial wastewater.

Introduction: Accurate and consistent data play a critical role in enabling health officials to make informed decisions regarding emerging trends in SARS-CoV-2 infections. Alongside traditional indicators such as the 7-day-incidence rate, wastewater-based epidemiology can provide valuable insights into SARS-CoV-2 concentration changes. However, the wastewater compositions and wastewater systems are rather complex.

Bio-based long-chain dicarboxylic acids (LCDAs) are in high demand in the polymer industry. These compounds have diverse applications as building blocks for polymers with distinct features, which lead to a fast-growing global LCDA market. However, bio-based LCDA production is currently limited in Europe as established processes are using the pathogenic yeast Candida tropicalis.

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and its antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are potential threats to public health. Microwave catalytic technology is an efficient environmental remediation technology, and a reasonable design of the catalyst enables the system to achieve an ideal remediation effect under low microwave power. In this study, a microwave catalyst (FeCO-2) that activates molecular oxygen (O) was designed on the basis of rational theoretical organization.

As freshwater demand grows globally, using reclaimed water in natural water bodies has become essential. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are widely used for advanced wastewater treatment due to their environmental benefits. However, low carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratios in wastewater limit nitrogen removal, often leading to eutrophication.

The proliferation of micro/nanoplastics (MNPs) has emerged as a pivotal environmental issue, largely due to their potential for human exposure. Consequently, the development of sensitive and efficient detection methodologies is paramount for elucidating their environmental footprint. Here, we report a novel three-dimensional (3D) surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor, which integrate TiCT/TiO/WO semiconductor heterostructure, for the rapid and sensitive detection of MNPs in environmental matrices.
