Background: Current guidelines recommend empiric antibiotic therapy for patients who require hospitalization for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). We sought to determine whether clinical, imaging or laboratory features in patients hospitalized for CAP in whom PCR is positive for a respiratory virus enable exclusion of bacterial coinfection so that antibiotics can be withheld.
Methods: For this prospective study, we selected patients in whom an etiologic diagnosis was likely to be reached, namely those who provided a high-quality sputum sample at or shortly after admission, and in whom PCR was done to test for a respiratory virus.

Background/aim: Atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF) commonly co-occur, significantly increasing morbidity and mortality. Poorly controlled AF can contribute to complications like HF and is associated with conditions, such as stroke and pulmonary embolism (PE). This report involves a man with AF who had persistent respiratory symptoms and left-sided chest pain, initially suspected to be PE, but eventually diagnosed as HF.

Background: Among white populations, a poly-specific antibody response against measles (M), rubella (R) and varicella zoster(Z) otherwise known as MRZR is seen in ∼70 % of MS and rarely in other demyelinating disorders. While the basis for MRZR is unclear, vaccination exposure / community acquired infections may have an influence on its frequency.
Objective: To determine the frequency and specificity of MRZR in MS and related disorders in a non- white population with historically low vaccinations and to contrast against oligoclonal bands (OCB).

Pertussis remains a significant public health concern despite effective vaccines due to diagnostic challenges and symptom overlap with other respiratory infections. This study assesses the prevalence of using advanced polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing and examines the clinical outcomes over a one-month follow-up. We conducted a cross-sectional study at the University Hospital of Larissa, Greece, from April to June 2024, collecting 532 nasopharyngeal swabs from patients with respiratory symptoms.

Background: The escalating demographic shift towards an aging population and the widespread occurrence of immunological diseases have contributed to an elevation in the frequency of community-acquired infections. Notably, among these infections, community-acquired bloodstream infections (CABSI) stand out due to their significant lethality. Detailed medical history inquiries, assessment of underlying immune status, detection of the source of infection, and initial precise identification and treatment of the infectious agents can improve the prognosis of CABSI.
