The serum levels of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were measured in a middle-aged Korean population and investigated associations with age, gender, body mass index (BMI), metabolic syndrome (MS), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and dietary habits. The median concentrations of 22 OCPs and 34 PCBs in the serum samples were 483 and 216 ng g lipid, respectively. The most abundant compound was p,p'-DDE, followed by PCB 153, β-HCH, PCB 118, and PCB 180. The results of multiple linear regression and other statistical analyses revealed that serum OCP and PCB levels were higher in women and were positively correlated with age. BMI was positively associated with serum OCP and PCB levels, reflecting the influence of food intake and the preserving effect of body fat. MS and T2DM were significantly associated with serum OCP and PCB levels. The intake of animal foods had positive associations with serum OCP and PCB levels, whereas the intake of phytogenic foods showed negative associations, presumably because of contamination levels in food items and food matrices that governs absorption and excretion of OCPs and PCBs in the body. The relationship between dietary habits and serum OCP and PCB levels were different in participants with MS compared to healthy participants, suggesting MS may alter the influence of food intake on serum OCP and PCB levels.

The relationship between breastfeeding duration and maternal mixtures of organochlorine pesticides (OCP) biological concentrations has not been documented. For that reason, our objective was to evaluate the association between lactation duration and mixtures of OCP serum concentrations and their principal metabolites, as well as to identify the primary contributors within these mixtures. Consequently, we conducted a secondary analysis of 878 women over 18 years old who had at least one living child and served as controls in a population-based study from 2007 to 2011 in Northern Mexico.

Ferroptosis has been recognized as an iron-based nonapoptotic-regulated cell death process. In the quest of resisting the unyielding vehemence of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), herein we have showcased the ferroptosis-inducing heteroleptic [], [], and [] complexes, enabling them to selectively target "sialic acid", an overexpressed cancer cell-surface marker. The open-circuit potential (OCP) measurements in live cancer cells revealed the specific interaction between TNBC and the complexes, whereas control experiments with normal cells did not exhibit such interactions.

Tin-silver (Sn-Ag) has been used as a permanently implanted biomaterial within the Essure female sterilization device and in dental amalgams; however, little data exist for Sn-Ag's corrosion characteristics and/or cellular interactions. In this study, to assess its suitability as a degradable metallic biomaterial, 95-5 wt% Sn-Ag solder was subjected to corrosion testing including open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and anodic potentiodynamic polarization in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and cell culture media (with serum proteins) at room temperature (25°C) and body temperature (37°C). Cell culture studies were also performed.

Epidemiological evidence regarding the associations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) with lipid metabolism and its potential biological mechanisms remain largely unknown. We intended to explore the associations of OCPs and PCBs with dyslipidemia and blood lipid levels, and further evaluate the mediating role of total and differential white blood cell (WBC) counts. We measured the blood lipid levels, the concentration of OCPs/PCBs and WBC counts in serum among 2036 adults in Wuhan city, China.
