Background: Bariatric surgery is very effective in long-term weight management. The present study was undertaken to investigate the short-term effects of sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) on (a) gastrointestinal (GI) motility, that is gastric emptying and oro-cecal transit time and (b) secretion of regulatory gut peptides and (c) their interrelationship.

Methods: Prospective single-centre study in which we assessed gastric emptying, oro-cecal transit time and gut peptide release in 28 severely obese individuals before and 2, respectively, 12 months after bariatric surgery (either SG or RYGB).

Purpose: This study investigated the evolution of neuromotor control during a typical short sport-specific rehabilitation program (SSR) in professional soccer players who had incurred a major lower-limb injury ( = 15, chondral and muscle injuries, ACL-reconstruction).

Methods: All injured participants ( = 15) were in the on-field rehabilitation phase of their specific sport rehabilitation process, prior to return to play. An experimental group (EG, chondral and muscle injuries, ACL-reconstruction) followed a 3-week SSR-program composed of muscular and core strengthening (weightlifting, functional stability, explosivity and mobility exercises), running and cycling, neuromotor reprogramming, cognitive development and specific soccer on-field rehabilitation (acceleration, braking, cutting, dual-contact, high-speed-running, sprint, jump, drills with ball).

Determining Tyre Adhesion Characteristics Based on the Road Tests of Automobiles.

Sensors (Basel)

November 2024

Institute of Vehicles and Construction Machinery Engineering, Warsaw University of Technology, 84 Narbutta Str., 02-524 Warsaw, Poland.

The motion of automobiles significantly depends on the conditions of interaction between a tyre and a road surface. One of the most frequently used ways of presenting the conditions of cooperation between a tyre and a road surface is a characteristic showing a longitudinal adhesion coefficient as a function of a longitudinal slip of a tyre. One of the methods for determining tyre-to-road adhesion characteristics is to use a special trailer combined with a towing vehicle.

The Influence of Occupant Characteristics, Seat Positioning, and Pre-Crash Maneuvers on Front Passenger Safety Performance.

J Biomech Eng

December 2024

Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA.

Crash avoidance vehicle maneuvers are known to influence occupant posture and kinematics which consequently may influence injury risks in the event of a crash. In this work, a generic buck vehicle finite element (FE) model was developed which included the vehicle interior and the front passenger airbag (PAB). Seat position and occupant characteristics including anthropometry, sex, and age were varied in a design of experiments.

Bipedal locomotion requires body adaptation to maintain stability after encountering a transition to incline walking. A major part of this adaptation is reflected by adjusting walking speed. When transitioning to uphill walking, people exert more energy to counteract gravitational forces pulling them backward, while when transitioning to downhill walking people break to avoid uncontrolled acceleration.
