Objective: To investigate the clinicopathological features and outcomes between node-negative, early-stage cervical squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and adenocarcinoma (AC) after hysterectomy.

Methods: Patients diagnosed with International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stages I-IIA cervical SCC and AC between 1988 and 2013 were retrospectively reviewed using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. We used propensity score-matching to balance patient baseline characteristics. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were used for prognostic analyses of cause-specific survival (CSS) and overall survival (OS).

Results: A total of 9,858 patients were identified, comprising 6,117 patients (62.1%) and 3,741 (37.9%) patients with cervical SCC and AC, respectively. Compared with cervical SCC, cervical AC cases were more likely to be younger, diagnosed after 2000, white, and have well-differentiated and FIGO stage IB1 disease. For SCC and AC, the 10-year CSS rates were 93.4% and 94.7%, respectively (p=0.011), and the 10-year OS rates were 89.6% and 92.2%, respectively (p<0.001). Multivariate analysis revealed that age, ethnicity, tumor grade, and FIGO stage were independent prognostic factors of CSS and OS, but that histologic subtype was not associated with CSS and OS. In the propensity score-matched patient population, univariate and multivariate analyses also showed that histologic subtype was not associated with survival outcomes.

Conclusion: Cervical AC has equivalent survival to cervical SCC in node-negative, early-stage disease after hysterectomy and lymphadenectomy.

Anti-Estrogen Therapy Achieves Complete Remission and Stability in Recurrent Cervical Cancer: A Case Study.

BACKGROUND Studies using transgenic mouse models have demonstrated that estrogen is necessary for the development of cervical cancer, particularly in tissues responsive to estrogen. Estrogen also protects cervical cancer cells from apoptosis, suggesting its role in the survival and persistence of cancer cells. CASE REPORT An 84-year-old woman with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and stage III chronic renal failure was diagnosed with cervical squamous cell carcinoma, FIGO stage IB2.

Vermillion lip squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a rare cancer, currently grouped together with the cutaneous lip under the cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) system. Herein, we present a case of an 81-year-old male with locally advanced lower lip SCC involving the vermillion who achieved a complete pathologic response to neoadjuvant cetuximab after the failure of the programed cell death protein-1 (PD-1) inhibitor, cemiplimab. He was followed with clinical observation, with special attention to skin/mucosal surfaces.

The clinical utility of circulating human papillomavirus across squamous cell carcinomas.

Department of Experimental Clinical Oncology, Aarhus University Hospital, Aarhus, Denmark; Department of Clinical Medicine, Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark.

Background And Purpose: The similarities in biology, treatment regimens and outcome between the different human papillomavirus (HPV) associated squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) allow for extrapolation of results generated from one SC tumor type to another. In HPV associated cancers, HPV is integrated into the tumor genome and can consequently be detected in the circulating fragments of the tumor DNA. Thus, measurement of HPV in the plasma is a surrogate for circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) and holds promise as a clinically relevant biomarker in HPV associated cancers.

Laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers are prominent within head and neck malignancies. The diagnosis of distant metastasis (DM) invariably signals poor prognosis, underscoring the need to optimize current treatment approaches. Patient data for metastatic laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer were extracted from the SEER database (2000-2020).

Vestibular Implant Surgery: How to Deal With Obstructed Semicircular Canals-A Diagnostic and Surgical Guide.

Division of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Department of Clinical Neurosciences, Geneva University Hospitals, University of Geneva, Geneva, Switzerland.

Background: A vestibular implant can partially restore vestibular function by providing motion information through implanted electrodes. During vestibular implantation, various obstructions of the semicircular canals, such as protein deposits, fibrosis, and ossification, can be encountered. The objective was to explore the relationship between preoperative imaging and intraoperative findings of semicircular canal obstruction and to develop surgical strategies for dealing with obstructions of the semicircular canal(s) in patients eligible for vestibular implantation.
