Natural infection with larval Echinococcus multilocularis was recognized in one of eight Norway rats, Rattus norvegicus, caught indoors in 2009 in Ebetsu, Hokkaido, northern Japan. Cystic lesions were found in the right median and lateral lobes of the liver, with numerous alveolar cysts in the periphery of the lesions. Protoscolices were formed within large cysts. The laminated layers of the cysts were positive for PAS staining. Nested PCR using the primers specific for Taenia mitochondrial 12S rDNA yielded a 250-bp product, and the sequence of the PCR product matched that of E. multilocularis isolates from Hokkaido and Germany. This is the third natural alveolar hydatidosis in R. norvegicus in Japan.

Objective: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) caused by the larval stage of the parasite is a global health problem. This study aimed to assess cases of CE admitted to our General Surgery Department retrospectively, as there is no known similar publication concerning surgical treatment of abdominal cystic echinococcosis in Çanakkale province.
Materials And Methods: We analyzed laboratory and radiological findings alongside clinical and demographic features, treatments, and outcomes of cases undergoing surgical treatment for abdominal cystic echinococcosis in our department between 2012 and 2022.

Pluripotent somatic stem cells are the drivers of unlimited growth of Echinococcus multilocularis metacestode tissue within the organs of the intermediate host. To understand the dynamics of parasite proliferation within the host, it is therefore important to delineate basic mechanisms of Echinococcus stem cell maintenance and differentiation. We herein undertake the first step towards characterizing the role of an evolutionarily old metazoan cell-cell communication system, delta/notch signalling, in Echinococcus cell fate decisions.

Alveolar echinococcosis is a zoonosis caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus multilocularis. In previous studies, QTL analysis using C57BL/6 N (B6) and DBA/2 (D2) which differ in susceptibility suggested the presence of genes on chromosome 1 that control protoscolex development. In this study, we constructed several congenic mice with different chromosome 1 regions substituted to confirm the presence of responsible genes and to narrow down the regions where the responsible genes exist.
