Article Synopsis
  • - Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) Cry proteins, like Cry14Ab, have been used in transgenic crops for insect pest control and now show promise against nematodes, particularly the soybean cyst nematode
  • - Recent studies indicate that Cry14Ab effectively targets various gastrointestinal nematode parasites both in laboratory settings (in vitro) and in live animals (in vivo)
  • - A related protein, Cry14Ac, was identified and shown to be effective against certain nematodes, demonstrating potential for further development as an anthelmintic treatment

is a bacterium ubiquitous in aquatic environments which can cause widespread infection worldwide. gradually became a rare species of bacteria in clinical microbiology laboratories with the control of the cholera epidemic. In this study, we isolated a strain, named VCHL017, from the blood of an elderly patient without gastrointestinal symptoms.

Background: The Necator americanus hemoglobinase, aspartic protease-1 (Na-APR-1), facilitates the ability of adult hookworms to parasitize the intestine of their human hosts. A recombinant version of APR-1 protected laboratory animals against hookworm infection by inducing neutralizing antibodies that block the protein's enzymatic activity and thereby impair blood feeding. A catalytically inactive version of the wild-type hemoglobinase (Na-APR-1(M74)) was expressed by infiltrating Nicotiana benthamiana tobacco plants with an Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain engineered to express the vaccine antigen, which was adjuvanted with aluminum hydroxide adjuvant (Alhydrogel).

Exogenous Integrin αIIbβ3 Inhibitors Revisited: Past, Present and Future Applications.

Int J Mol Sci

March 2021

Department of Biochemistry, Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht (CARIM), Maastricht University, 6229 ER Maastricht, The Netherlands.

The integrin αIIbβ3 is the most abundant integrin on platelets. Upon platelet activation, the integrin changes its conformation (inside-out signalling) and outside-in signalling takes place leading to platelet spreading, platelet aggregation and thrombus formation. Bloodsucking parasites such as mosquitoes, leeches and ticks express anticoagulant and antiplatelet proteins, which represent major sources of lead compounds for the development of useful therapeutic agents for the treatment of haemostatic disorders or cardiovascular diseases.
