The application of ball-milling for reactant powders (Fe O +Al) to form in situ nanosized reaction products in the stir zone of 1050 aluminium alloy was examined and the evolution of microstructure, grain boundaries and microtexture of the fabricated Al/(Al Fe +Al O ) nanocomposite was investigated. The mean matrix grain size of the fabricated nanocomposites by the combination of ball milling and friction stir processing were found to be ∼3.2, 3.1 and 2.1 μm for 1, 2 and 3 h milled powder mixtures, respectively. The fraction of high-angle grain boundaries increased markedly in the stir zone indicating the occurrence of dynamic restoration of the aluminium matrix. This was also associated with increasing of the fraction of low ∑CSL boundaries. In addition, the fraction of high-angle grain boundaries increased as the reaction product increased. The developed textures were compared with the most important deformation and recrystallisation texture components of cubic close packed structure. Some of the main texture components formed due to the restoration of aluminium in the stir zone of the material with no powder addition were Cube {001}<310>, BR {236}<385> and R (or retained S{123} <634>); these are usually found in the rolled materials. However, the presence of nanosized reaction products in the fabricated nanocomposite changed the texture components to the dominant Goss {011}<100>, P {011}<122> and R{124}<211> textures.

Friction-stir-welded dissimilar AA2024/AA7075 joints have an apparent influence on grain and texture development at the weld interface due to differences in physical and chemical properties between the two aluminum alloys. In this work, the effect of tool shoulder profile on grain structure and texture evolution in the center interface zone (CIZ) and bottom interface zone (BIZ) of dissimilar AA2024/AA7075 joints were quantitatively studied by electron back-scattering diffraction (EBSD). The results indicate that abundant fine and coarse equiaxial grains are produced in the CIZ and BIZ of the joints produced with a concentric circle shoulder (CCS) and three-helix shoulder (THS), and the average grain size of the BIZ is lower than that of the CIZ for the same CCS or THS joint.

Aluminium-lithium (Al-Li) 2060 alloy, a 3rd generation Al-Li alloy, is considered a structural material for aircraft components. This study employs the Friction Stir Welding (FSW) process with a kinematic 5-axis robotic arm to weld 4-mm-thick plates of 2060-T8E30 Al-Li alloy. The focus is on the impact of tool axial force and speeds on the microstructural evolution, mechanical properties, and surface integrity of the welded joints.

Friction stir processing (FSP) is successfully employed to alleviate their hook defects of friction stir lap welding (FSLW) of aluminum alloys. The mechanical properties and microstructural characteristics are compared and analyzed between the FSLW&FSP joint fabricated by FSLW and FSP and the FSLW joint. The microstructural analysis shows that the hook defect zone at the advancing side of the FSLW joint is changed into the overlap zone (OZ) of the FSLW&FSP joint due to microstructure reconstruction caused by performing the FSP.

The frequency of plastic debris entering agricultural land is likely going to increase due to increased discharge into surface waters and more frequent flood events. Microbial biofilm on the surfaces of plastic pollution (known as the 'plastisphere') in freshwater environments often includes human pathogenic bacteria capable of causing disease. Pathogens have been detected on the surface of plastics in freshwater environments, but it is yet to be determined whether plastic debris can also transport pathogens into agricultural fields during flooding.
