Purpose: Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a serious malignant tumor that affects human health. We analyzed the correlation between serum stathmin level and ESCC and elucidated the molecular mechanisms of stathmin's promotion of ESCC cell invasion and metastasis.
Methods: Stathmin level in ESCC and healthy control serum were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and the clinical parameters were analyzed. We established ESCC cells with stathmin overexpression or knockdown and then evaluated the effects of stathmin on invasion and metastasis in ESCC. Differentially expressed genes were analyzed by Human Transcriptome Array and confirmed by RT-PCR. The expression levels of the integrin family, focal adhesion kinase (FAK) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) were detected by immunoblotting.
Results: Serum levels of stathmin were significantly higher in ESCC than in control serum and associated with lymph node metastasis, tumor stage and size. Furthermore, we found that stathmin promoted migration and invasion of ESCC cells and . In addition, we confirmed that the activation of the integrinα5β1/FAK/ERK pathway is increased in stathmin-overexpression cells and accelerates cell motility by enhancing cell adhesion ability.
Conclusion: Stathmin may predict a potential metastasis biomarker for ESCC.

Purpose: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by esophagectomy is the usual approach to manage esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). The optimal interval to operate after completion of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NACRT) still remains controversial.
Methods: A prospective study was conducted to observe and compare postoperative complications and pathological outcomes in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus who underwent NACRT followed by surgery within 8 weeks or after 8 weeks of NACRT completion.
CCN1 is a matricellular protein highly expressed in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) but hardly detectable in esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). Expression of CCN1 in EAC cells leads to TRAIL-mediated apoptosis. Unlike TRAIL, which primarily triggers cell death, APRIL and BAFF promote cell growth via NFκB signaling.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a highly heterogeneous and aggressive malignancy. The progression, invasiveness, and metastatic potential of ESCC are shaped by a multitude of cells within the tumor microenvironment (TME), including tumor cells, immune cells, endothelial cells, as well as fibroblasts and other cell types. Recent advancements in single-cell sequencing technologies have significantly enhanced our comprehension of the diverse landscape of ESCC.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), the most predominant subtype of esophageal cancer, is notorious for its high lymph node metastatic potential and poor prognosis. Growing evidence has demonstrated crucial function of circRNAs in human malignancies. However, the knowledge of circRNAs in lymph node metastasis of ESCC is still inadequate.

Poor oral health is an independent risk factor for upper-aerodigestive tract cancers, including esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC); thus, good oral health may reduce the risk of ESCC. We previously reported that high expression of Toll-like receptor (TLR) 6, which recognizes peptidoglycan (PGN) from Gram-positive bacteria correlates with a good prognosis after esophagectomy for ESCC. Most beneficial bacteria in the mouth are Gram-positive.
