Emotion recognition plays an important role in several applications, such as human computer interaction and understanding affective state of users in certain tasks, e.g., within a learning process, monitoring of elderly, interactive entertainment etc. It may be based upon several modalities, e.g., by analyzing facial expressions and/or speech, using electroencephalograms, electrocardiograms etc. In certain applications the only available modality is the user's (speaker's) voice. In this paper we aim to analyze speakers' emotions based solely on paralinguistic information, i.e., not depending on the linguistic aspect of speech. We compare two machine learning approaches, namely a Convolutional Neural Network and a Support Vector Machine. The former is trained using raw speech information, while the latter is trained on a set of extracted low-level features. Aiming to provide a multilingual approach, training and testing datasets contain speech from different languages.

Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous neurobiological condition characterized by behavioral problems and delayed neurodevelopment. Although transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been proposed as an alternative treatment for patients with ASD because of its promising benefits in reducing repetitive behaviors and enhancing executive functions, the use of high-intensity pulses (Hi-TMS) appears to be related to the side effects of the therapy. Low-intensity TMS (Li-TMS) has been partially investigated, but it may have clinical effects on ASD and simultaneously increase treatment safety.

We report a case of optic neuritis (ON) secondary to autoimmune encephalitis (AE) in a patient with concomitant antibodies to N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR), gamma-aminobutyric acid-B receptor (GABAR), and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG). The patient exhibited a constellation of symptoms, including vision loss, seizures, mental and behavioral disorders, cognitive impairment, and speech abnormalities. At the two-year follow-up, the patient's symptoms had abated entirely.

The cooperative principle states that communicators expect each other to be cooperative and adhere to rational conversational principles. Do listeners keep track of the reasoning sophistication of the speaker and incorporate it into the inferences they derive? In two experiments, we asked participants to interpret ambiguous messages in the reference game paradigm, which they were told were sent either by another adult or by a 4-year-old child. We found an effect of speaker identity: if sent by an adult, an ambiguous message was much more likely to be interpreted as an implicature, while if sent by a child, it was a lot more likely to be interpreted literally.
