We demonstrate determination of the location of the distal-end of a fibre-optic device deep in tissue through the imaging of ballistic and snake photons using a time resolved single-photon detector array. The fibre was imaged with centimetre resolution, within clinically relevant settings and models. This technique can overcome the limitations imposed by tissue scattering in optically determining the location of fibre-optic medical instruments.

Article Synopsis
  • Graphene has become a key material for electron optical experiments, showing advantages over traditional two-dimensional electron gases, such as high mobility and precise electrostatic control for creating gap-less p-n interfaces.
  • These interfaces can host unique particle states and are crucial for building complex electron devices like interferometers, leveraging features like the Dirac spectrum and Berry phase.
  • The review covers the theoretical foundations, fabrication methods, and simulation techniques for graphene electron optics, along with analysis of ballistic transport experiments and current advancements in devices like Mach-Zender and Fabry-Perot interferometers.

Dynamics of active polar ring polymers.

The conformational and dynamical properties of isolated semiflexible active polar ring polymers are investigated analytically. A ring is modeled as a continuous Gaussian polymer exposed to tangential active forces. The analytical solution of the linear non-Hermitian equation of motion in terms of an eigenfunction expansion shows that ring conformations are independent of activity.

Light scattering poses a challenge for imaging deep in scattering media as the ballistic light exponentially attenuates with depth. In contrast to the ballistic light, the multiply scattered light penetrates deeper and also contains information about the sample. One technique to image deeper is to selectively detect only a subset of the multiply scattered light, namely the 'snake' photons, which are predominantly forward scattered and retain more direct information than the more strongly scattered light.

The influence of the initial polarization state of a source on the detection range of a system probing through natural dense water fog is analyzed. Information about the source is conveyed by ballistic, snake, and highly scattered photons. During propagation, the polarization state of ballistic and snake photons is not altered.

We report on the evolution of the coherent electronic transport through a gate-defined constriction in a high-mobility graphene device from ballistic transport to quantum Hall regime upon increasing the magnetic field. At a low field, the conductance exhibits Fabry-Pérot resonances resulting from the npn cavities formed beneath the top-gated regions. Above a critical field B* corresponding to the cyclotron radius equal to the npn cavity length, Fabry-Pérot resonances vanish, and snake trajectories are guided through the constriction with a characteristic set of conductance oscillations.
