A 40-year-old farmer from the district of North Karnataka who had received treatment for high fever of 8 days duration was admitted with fever, dyspnea, and poor general condition. Ultrasonography and echocardiogram revealed multiple splenic abscesses, vegetation on atrioventricular valve, aortic regurgitation (Grade I-II), and mitral valve regurgitation (Grade II-III), respectively. was detected in blood culture, and high titers of IgM and IgG anti- antibodies were observed in specific serological tests. The patient developed fulminant septicemia and succumbed due to multi-organ failure.

Aortic regurgitation in ankylosing spondylitis-an echocardiography follow-up study.

Clin Rheumatol

January 2025

Department of Rheumatology and Inflammation Research, Institute of Medicine at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Göteborg, Sweden.

Objectives: To investigate the long-term course of aortic regurgitation (AR) and the width of the proximal ascending aorta (PAA) in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS).

Method: This is a follow-up cohort study of patients with AS examined with echocardiography at inclusion (2009 to 2011). Out of the initial 187, a subgroup of 52 patients (54% men, mean age 62 years) was selected for follow-up based on presence/absence of AR at baseline; 26 with AR (18 mild, 7 moderate, 1 severe) and 26 age/sex-matched without AR.

Background: Significant tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The development of transcatheter valve repair therapies has opened a wide range of opportunities for treatment of patients with high surgical risk. Real-world data might improve patient selection and outcome.

Aims: To evaluate the association between transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) and outcomes in patients with significant mitral regurgitation (MR) following acute myocardial infarction (MI), focusing on the aetiology of acute post-MI MR in high-risk surgical patients.

Methods And Results: The International Registry of MitraClip in Acute Mitral Regurgitation following Acute Myocardial Infarction (IREMMI) includes 187 patients with severe MR post-MI managed with TEER. Of these, 176 were included in the analysis, 23 (13%) patients had acute papillary muscle rupture (PMR) and 153 (87%) acute secondary MR.

Transapical beating heart septal myectomy learning curve and training of future surgeons: an observational study.

Int J Surg

December 2024

Division of Cardiovascular Surgery, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, People's Republic of China.

Background: Description of the learning curve for transapical beating heart septal myectomy (TA-BSM) helps to understand the potential for wider adaptability. The authors elaborate and examine a competency-based training assessment for TA-BSM that could serve to disseminate septal myectomy expertise.

Materials And Methods: Data on 177 consecutive patients who underwent the TA-BSM for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) between April 2022 and June 2023 was collected prospectively, which was registered on ClinicalTrials.

Impact of Exercise on Atrial Functional Mitral Regurgitation and Its Determinants: An Exercise Echocardiographic Study.

Am J Cardiol

January 2025

Research group Cardiovascular Diseases, Department GENCOR, University of Antwerp, Antwerp, Belgium; Department of Cardiology, Antwerp University Hospital, Edegem, Belgium. Electronic address:

Atrial functional mitral regurgitation (AFMR) is a distinct form of mitral regurgitation in patients with atrial fibrillation and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. Its pathophysiology remains elusive, and data on exercise-related AFMR are scarce. We sought to investigate the impact of acute exercise on AFMR severity and to identify its determinants.
