Published: November 2017

Objective: We studied motor unit recruitment to test a new method to identify motor unit firing rate (FR) variability.

Methods: We studied 68 ALS patients, with and without upper neuron signs (UMN) in lower limbs, 24 patients with primary lateral sclerosis (PLS), 13 patients with spinal cord lesion and 39 normal subjects. All recordings were made from tibialis anterior muscles of normal strength. Subjects performed a very slight contraction in order to activate 2 motor units in each recording. 5-7 motor unit pairs were recorded in each subject. Mean consecutive differences (MCD) were calculated for each pair of potentials. The mean MCD for each muscle was estimated as the mean from the total number of pairs recorded. Ap value<0.01 was accepted as significant.

Results: MCD of FR frequency was less in the subjects with spinal cord lesion and PLS. In addition, the FR frequency of the 1st motor unit in a pair of units was markedly reduced in PLS, and in subjects with spinal cord lesions.

Conclusion: These results support a lower threshold and reduced FR fluctuation in spinal motor neurons of spastic patients.

Significance: This method can be developed for detection of UMN lesions.

Background: To explore the utility of general movements assessment as a predictive tool of the neurological outcome in term-born infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) at ages six and 12 months.

Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted for 18 months (August 2018 to December 2019). Term-born newborns with HIE were included.

Background: Circulating levels of the female hormone estrogen has been associated with the development of Parkinson's disease (PD), although the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Immune homeostasis mediated by peripheral regulatory T cells (Treg) is a crucial factor in PD. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of estrogen deficiency on neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration in a rodent model of PD, with particular reference to Treg.

The complicated neurological syndrome known as multiple sclerosis (MS) is typified by demyelination, inflammation, and neurodegeneration in the central nervous system (CNS). Managing this crippling illness requires an understanding of the complex interactions between neurophysiological systems, diagnostic techniques, and therapeutic methods. A complex series of processes, including immunological dysregulation, inflammation, and neurodegeneration, are involved in the pathogenesis of MS.

Associations of Voice Metrics with Postural Function in Parkinson's Disease.

Life (Basel)

Neuromodulation Center and Center for Clinical Research Learning, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, 1575 Cambridge Street, Cambridge, MA 02115, USA.

Background: This study aimed to explore the potential associations between voice metrics of patients with PD and their motor symptoms.

Methods: Motor and vocal data including the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale part III (UPDRS-III), Harmonic-Noise Ratio (HNR), jitter, shimmer, and smoothed cepstral peak prominence (CPPS) were analyzed through exploratory correlations followed by univariate linear regression analyses. We employed these four voice metrics as independent variables and the total and sub-scores of the UPDRS-III as dependent variables.

The ubiquitin proteasome system (UPS) is implicated in protein homeostasis. One of the proteins involved in this system is HERC1 E3 ubiquitin ligase, which was associated with several processes including the normal development and neurotransmission at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ), autophagy in projection neurons, myelination of the peripheral nervous system, among others. The tambaleante (tbl) mouse model carries the spontaneous mutation Gly483Glu substitution in the HERC1 E3 protein.
