Propionate is the most delicate intermediate during anaerobic digestion as its degradation is thermodynamically unfavorable. To determine its maximum possible degradation rates during anaerobic digestion, a reactor was fed Monday to Friday with an organic loading rate (OLR) of 12/14 kg COD·m·d plus propionate up to a final OLR of 18 kg COD·m·d. No feed was supplied on weekends as it was the case in full-scale. To maintain permanently high propionate oxidizing activity (POA), a basic OLR of 3 kg COD·m·d all week + 11 kg COD·m·d from Monday to Friday was supplied. Finally a reactor was operated with an OLR of 12 kg COD·m·d from Monday to Friday and 5 kg COD·m·d from Friday night to Monday morning to maintain a constant gas production for permanent operation of a gas engine. The propionate degradation rates (PDRs) were determined for biowaste + propionate feeding. Decreasing PDRs during starvation were analyzed. The POA was higher after propionate supply than after biowaste feeding and decreased faster during starvation of a propionate-fed rather than a biowaste-fed inoculum. Shifts of the propionate-oxidizing and methanogenic community were determined.

To examine the changes in obesity-related hormones and metabolic syndrome markers in male high school students with obesity following a weekend-focused moderate- or high-intensity exercise program at the recommended weekly physical activity level, or a program of regular exercise 3 times a week at moderate intensity, over a 10-week period. Forty-eight male high school students who were obese with a body fat percentage of ≥25% were randomly assigned to one of three groups: a regular moderate-intensity exercise group (n=17) that freely selected and performed moderate-intensity aerobic and resistance training exercises, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, for a total of 150-300 min/wk; a weekend-focused moderate-intensity exercise group (n=15) that freely selected and performed aerobic and resistance training exercises every Saturday for 150-300 min; and a week-end-focused high-intensity exercise group (n=16) that freely selected and performed aerobic and resistance training exercises every Sunday for 75-150 min. Insulin and leptin levels significantly decreased in all the groups, with the greatest reduction in the regular exercise group.

Primary frontal sinus squamous cell carcinoma (PFSSCC) represents a rare disease in dogs, and there is a general paucity of information in the current veterinary literature regarding its presentation and response to radiation therapy. The objective of this retrospective observational study was to describe a series of dogs diagnosed with PFSSCC and report their response to radiation therapy. Medical records of dogs with a diagnosis of PFSSCC were reviewed.

Asst Valcamonica, Breno (BS).

The Asst Valcamonica faces significant challenges in providing continuity of care services due to a shortage of medical personnel, exacerbated by its location in a mountainous area and the seasonal variability of tourism. To address these needs, a temporary nursing-run clinic was developed, aimed at providing healthcare to tourists, particularly during August 2023. The Family and Community Nurse (IFeC) plays a crucial role in primary care, working in synergy with remote medical consultations to ensure an integrated care model; provide first-level healthcare during peak tourist periods.

Chlorambucil is used in veterinary medicine for various cancers, while Toceranib, which was licenced for treating canine mast cell tumours, is now used against other solid tumours. Both drugs are generally safe, but their combined use has not been studied. This study aimed to investigate retrospectively the safety profile of the Chlorambucil-Toceranib combination against canine solid tumours.
