Background: Sleep-related eating may occur in the context of mental illness, sleep disorders, or psychopharmacological treatment. Frequently, sleep-related eating leads to severe weight gain and, so far, there are no treatment options for the condition.

Case Presentation: We report the case of a 54-year-old white woman with depression, panic disorder, and sleep apnea under treatment with various antidepressants who developed severe sleep-related eating. Her sleep-related eating completely vanished after addition of agomelatine, it reoccurred after cessation of agomelatine, and vanished again after her re-exposure to another melatonergic drug, extended melatonin.

Conclusions: This case suggests that melatonergic drugs lead to relief from sleep-related eating, even when the condition occurs in the context of physical and mental disorders as well as psychopharmacological treatment.

Previous research suggests a connection between borderline personality disorder (BPD) and somatic comorbidities, underscoring the importance of lifestyle and health-related behaviour (LHRB) in the emergence of BPD. We investigated LHRBs-physical activity, sleeping and overeating-among young people at different BPD stages compared to a matched community sample. Furthermore, we explored whether problematic LHRBs intensify in later BPD stages.

Obesity, a major health concern, is influenced by an individual's genetic makeup and lifestyle factors (eating, sedentary lifestyle, and sleep disruptions) that affect circadian clock and metabolism. This study investigates the impact of Clock gene variants rs6843722 and rs4864548 on obesity measures in the Pakistani population. Genetic-behavior interaction studies have focused on Western populations, overlooking South Asians.

Minnesota Regional Sleep Disorders Center, Departments of Psychiatry, Hennepin County Medical Center, University of Minnesota Medical School, Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States.

Article Synopsis
  • Sleep-related dissociative disorder (SRDD) is a psychiatric condition mostly affecting women, recognized since 1989 and officially classified in 2005, characterized by unusual dissociative episodes occurring during sleep transitions.
  • Key features include sustained EEG wakefulness during episodes, observed in about half of cases, which typically follow disruptions in sleep stages.
  • The report highlights two new cases of SRDD in women with histories of severe childhood abuse and "sleep phobia," emphasizing the association between SRDD, nocturnal eating behaviors, and various triggering factors.

Article Synopsis
  • Parasomnias and sleep-related movement disorders (SRMD) are sleep disorders that can be triggered by certain medications, and this study aimed to review the literature on this association from January 2020 to June 2023.
  • Over 900 records were examined, identifying 73 drugs linked to common drug-induced parasomnias like nightmares and sleepwalking, as well as SRMDs such as restless legs syndrome and bruxism.
  • The study discusses potential mechanisms behind these disorders related to various neurotransmitters, including the impact of antipsychotics, opioids, and medications affecting serotonin, noradrenergic, and dopamine pathways, highlighting gaps in drug labeling for these conditions.
