Seropositivity diagnosis for hantavirus in Jataí, Goiás State, Brazil.

Published: November 2017

Introduction:: Emerging diseases are of great interest, especially those associated with high mortality rates such as hantaviruses. We aimed to conduct a seroepidemiological survey to determine the levels of hantavirus infection.

Methods:: In-house enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect specific antibodies.

Results:: Of the 429 samples collected, seropositivity of 3.9% to anti-hantavirus immunoglobulin G (IgG) was observed (CI 95%: 2.3-5.7). Moreover, in three cases, immunoglobulin M (IgM) was detected, of which two were diagnosed as hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS).

Conclusions:: Our data indicate the considerable occurrence of previous hantavirus infections, highlighting occurrences from sub-clinical cases to HCPS.

Background: The diagnosis of West Nile virus (WNV) is challenging due to short-term and low-level viremia, flavivirus cross-reactivity, and long immunoglobulin M (IgM) persistence.

Aim: To evaluate different methods for WNV detection [reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), IgM/IgG antibodies, IgG avidity] in serum, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and urine samples of patients with confirmed WNV infection.

Methods: The study included patients with confirmed WNV neuroinvasive infection ( = 62), asymptomatic WNV seropositive individuals ( = 22), and individuals with false-positive WNV IgM antibodies ( = 30).

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative motor neuron disease that leads to a gradual loss of motor neurons manifesting as progressive weakness, dysarthria, and respiratory decline, with a relatively short life expectancy. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by polyarthritis and affects multiple systems. Motor neuron involvement is rare in rheumatoid arthritis.

The epidemiology and clinical presentation of seropositive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder in a US population.

Ann Clin Transl Neurol

December 2024

Departments of Neurology and Ophthalmology, Programs in Neuroscience and Immunology, Anschutz Medical Campus, University of Colorado School of Medicine, Aurora, Colorado, USA.

Objective: To define the epidemiology and clinical presentation of seropositive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) in a large US health system.

Methods: We completed a retrospective observational study of adult patients in the University of Colorado Health System from 1 January 2011 to 31 December 2020, using Health Data Compass (HDC), a data warehouse that combines electronic health information with claims and public health data in Colorado. We screened HDC for patients with either (1) an abnormal aquaporin-4 IgG test or (2) any G36 ICD-10 code.

Background: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a rare autoimmune disease most frequently characterized by a neuromyelitis optica (NMO) phenotype, comprising both simultaneous or sequential optic neuritis (ON) and longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM). Symptoms of brainstem, diencephalic and cerebral involvement may also occur. While most NMOSD patients test positive for serum aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibodies, some seronegative patients test positive for oligodendrocyte glycoprotein-IgG (MOG-IgG).
