Measurements of energy-resolved positron-molecule annihilation show the existence of positron binding and vibrational Feshbach resonances. The existing theory describes this phenomenon successfully for the case of infrared-active vibrational modes that allow dipole coupling between the incident positron and the vibrational motion. Presented here are measurements of positron-molecule annihilation made using a recently developed cryogenic positron beam capable of significantly improved energy resolution. The results provide evidence of resonances associated with infrared-inactive vibrational modes, indicating that positron-molecule bound states may be populated by nondipole interactions. The anticipated ingredients for a theoretical description of such interactions are discussed.

Spectroscopy and Dynamics of the Dipole-Bound States of -, -, and -Methylphenolate Anions.

A photodetachment and photoelectron spectroscopic study by employing a cryogenically cooled ion trap combined with a velocity-map imaging setup has been carried out to unravel the vibrational structures and autodetachment dynamics of the dipole-bound states (DBSs) of -, -, and -methylphenolate anions (-, -, and -CHPhO). The electron binding energy of the DBS increases monotonically with the increase of the neutral dipole moment to give respective values of 66 ± 15, 123 ± 18, or 154 ± 14 cm for the -, -, or -isomer. The different electron-donating effects of the methyl moieties in the three geometrically different isomers seem to be reflected in the experiment.

The Ã1A″ ← X̃1A' absorption spectra of HONO and DONO were simulated by a full six-dimensional quantum mechanical method based on the newly constructed potential energy surfaces for the ground and excited electronic states, which were represented by the neural network method utilizing over 36 000 ab initio energy points calculated at the multireference configuration interaction level with Davidson correction. The absorption spectrum of HONO/DONO comprises a superposition of the spectra from two isomers, namely, trans- and cis-HONO/DONO, due to their coexistence in the ground X̃1A' state. Our calculated spectra of both HONO and DONO were found to be in fairly good agreement with the experiment, including the energy positions and widths of the peaks.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on high-resolution photodetachment spectroscopy of the anionic tellurium dimer (Te2-), which was cooled to cryogenic temperatures for precise measurements.
  • The research provided an accurate electron affinity for Te2, identified resonant states just below and above the photodetachment threshold, and showed unique behaviors in the spectroscopic results.
  • Additionally, the team determined important molecular properties like bond distances and constants for both the ground state and excited states of Te2-.

High vibrational excitation of the reagent transforms the late-barrier H + HOD reaction into an early-barrier reaction.

Polanyi's rules predict that a late-barrier reaction yields vibrationally cold products; however, experimental studies showed that the H2 product from the late-barrier H + H2O(|04⟩-) and H + HOD(vOH = 4) reactions is vibrationally hot. Here, we report a potential-averaged five-dimensional state-to-state quantum dynamics study for the H + HOD(vOH = 0-4) → H2 + OD reactions on a highly accurate potential energy surface with the total angular momentum J = 0. It is found that with the HOD vibration excitation increasing from vOH = 1 to 4, the product H2 becomes increasingly vibrationally excited and manifests a typical characteristic of an early barrier reaction for vOH = 3 to 4.

Energies and lifetimes of vibrational resonances were computed for O-enriched isotopologue O = {OOO and OOO} of the ozone molecule using hyperspherical coordinates and the method of complex absorbing potential. Various types of scattering resonances were identified, including roaming OO-O rotational states, the series corresponding to continuation of bound vibrational resonances of highly excited bending or symmetric stretching vibrational modes. Such a series become metastable above the dissociation limit.
