In the present study, biological activity and chemical composition of two crude extracts of endophytic fungal strains of genera isolated from two species of aquatic macrophytes: (Kunth) and (Mart.) were investigated. The nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry data provided the identification of three main compounds: curvulin (), spirostaphylotrichin R () and U (). The fragmentation mechanism of the precursor ions towards collision induced dissociation (CID) tandem mass spectrometry experiment (MS/MS) is also proposed. Furthermore, biological screening of the crude extracts displayed antileishmanial activity with IC values ranging from 70-84.2 μg.mL.

Tire wear microplastics (TWMs) are continuously generated during driving and are subsequently released into the environment, where they pose potential risks to aquatic organisms. In this study, the effects of untreated, hydrated, and environmentally aged TWMs on the growth, root development, photosynthesis, electron transport system (ETS) activity, and energy-rich molecules of duckweed Lemna minor were investigated. The results indicated that untreated and aged TWMs have the most pronounced negative effects on Lemna minor, as evidenced by reduced growth and impaired root development.

The extent of alien taxa impacts on river ecosystem health is unclear, but their frequency continues to rise. We investigated 1) the prevalence of including alien taxa in common bioindicators used in river bioassessment, 2) the effect of alien taxa on the richness and abundance of natives, and 3) whether including alien taxa in bioassessment tools increased their sensitivity to river degradation. In the 17 countries analyzed fish represented the greatest number of alien species (1726), followed by macrophytes (925), macroinvertebrates (556), and diatoms (7).

Communities with high native species diversity tend to be less susceptible to the establishment of invasive species, especially in studies that test their local impact. This study investigated the impact of competition between native submerged aquatic macrophytes (SAMs) ( and ) and the exotic , recognized for its invasive potential in aquatic ecosystems, through a mesocosm experiment conducted over six months. Two treatments were evaluated: the intraspecific competition of and an interspecific competition involving all three species.

Heat stress disturbs cellular homeostasis and alters the fitness of individual organisms. However, it is unclear whether thermal perturbations exacerbate the toxic effects of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) on trophic endpoints in freshwater ecosystems. We conducted a mesocosm experiment to investigate the impact of warming and PFASs on the widespread submerged macrophytes (Hydrilla verticillata) at a molecular level.
