Inward rectifier potassium currents (I ) belong to prominent ionic currents affecting both resting membrane voltage and action potential repolarization in cardiomyocytes. In existing integrative models of electrical activity of cardiac cells, they have been described as single current components. The proposed quantitative model complies with findings indicating that these channels are formed by various homomeric or heteromeric assemblies of channel subunits with specific functional properties. Each I may be expressed as a total of independent currents via individual populations of identical channels, i.e., channels formed by the same combination of their subunits. Solution of the model equations simulated well recently observed unique manifestations of dual ethanol effect in rat ventricular and atrial cells. The model reflects reported occurrence of at least two binding sites for ethanol within I channels related to slow allosteric conformation changes governing channel conductance and inducing current activation or inhibition. Our new model may considerably improve the existing models of cardiac cells by including the model equations proposed here in the particular case of the voltage-independent drug-channel interaction. Such improved integrative models may provide more precise and, thus, more physiologically relevant results.

Determination of reference intervals of venous blood gas and acid-base parameters in clinically healthy awake cats.

J Vet Emerg Crit Care (San Antonio)

January 2025

Department of Veterinary Surgical and Radiological Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis, Davis, California, USA.

Background: Venous blood gas and acid-base analysis is often performed in cats and requires appropriate reference intervals (RIs) for interpretation. The currently available RIs were created from small numbers of cats, while current guidelines suggest that a minimum number of 40 samples is required for the creation of an accurate/appropriate RI.

Key Findings: In 41 healthy awake cats, pH, PCO, PO, sodium, potassium, ionized calcium, chloride, glucose, and plasma lactate concentrations were measured, while bicarbonate, standardized base excess, and anion gap were calculated.

The poor reversibility of the zinc anode caused by interfacial side reactions and dendritic growth poses significant constraints on the practical application of aqueous zinc-ion batteries. Herein, a co-solute, acesulfame potassium, with strongly polar, zincophilic guest anions is introduced into a conventional low-concentration aqueous electrolyte. This regulation enhances the electrolyte's ionic conductivity and accelerates the desolvation process of zinc ions at the electrode/electrolyte interface.

Electrocatalytic reforming of polyethylene terephthalate waste plastics into high-value-added chemicals with green hydrogen generation.

J Colloid Interface Sci

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Fine Chemicals, School of Chemical Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian 116024, China. Electronic address:

Electrochemical reforming offers a sustainable strategy for converting plastic waste into high-value-added chemicals and hydrogen fuel. Herein, a cost-effective NiFe-filmed electrode with a Tremella-like nanostructure was developed using an ultrasonic immersion etching method. This electrode enabled the electro-reforming of ethylene glycol (EG, a monomer of polyethylene terephthalate (PET)) into valuable commodity chemicals, with coproduction of hydrogen fuel.

January 2025

Medical School of Tianjin University, Academy of Medical Engineering and Translational Medicine, Tianjin, 300072, China. Electronic address:

Atherosclerosis-induced cardiovascular diseases are a leading cause of disability and mortality worldwide. Currently, clinical diagnosis of atherosclerosis relies on analysis and assessment by large medical equipment and specialized professionals, involving invasive testing, which limits early detection and prognosis of atherosclerosis. Herein, this work develops a flexible wearable ring sensor for non-invasive real-time in situ monitoring of biomarkers associated with atherosclerosis.

Background: Globally, obesity trends are a serious public health concern. Adolescent obesity is associated with cardiometabolic risk and metabolic disorders in adolescence and may persist into adulthood. The current study was designed to explore the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) in adolescents and its relationship with obesity, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome (MetS), and some inflammatory biomarkers.
